Big Sandy School hires Maddie Jenkins for English Teacher

August 4, 2021

I was going to attend the Big Sandy School Board meeting on the internet but could not connect. I visited with Kelly Haaland in his office about the last school board meeting.

Maddie Jenkins was hired as an English teacher for the Big Sandy High School. She has three years to get her English endorsement with a Class Five license, or she will be in an internship for three years. Maddie has a history endorsement currently but can teach English according to Montana law while working towards her English endorsement. She has taught English before and is looking forward to teaching it again.

“The number of people going into education is smaller. It’s a tough profession right now,” according to Kelly Haaland.

They are still looking for a full-time janitor. The school must meet the matrix set up by the board, so there isn’t much leeway in how much they can offer to pay them.

When I asked about school bus drivers, we both laughed because they still, as always, needed bus drivers. “It’s tough to find drivers. They are offering more for bus drivers, but it has not seemed to make a difference in getting any more people requiring about the position.

“We are still looking for an assistant cook, as well.”

Bus routes haven’t changed that much.

The people who put on the flooring recommends not opening the gym till the season opens. They filled the cracks with oil, and it takes longer to dry. The total cost of repairing the gym was $64,000.

The exercise room required they put a sealer on the new floor and the sealer was backed ordered. You could not walk on until the sealer was put on it.

They are working on the new fobs and the new cameras right now, and they should be finished shortly.

There are new rules concerning homeschoolers being allowed to participate in extra activities. “It’s the law! And we will follow the current law. “

He hopes to change the website, so people will find stuff to read on the pages. We’ll let you know when that is up and running.

They spend time at the last meeting reviewing policies, which at some point they hope to have upon the school website.
