The 4-H camp I went to was at Camp Rotary in the Little Belt mountains. When I got there registration was first. After that, I got to settle in at my cabin. Then I got to look around and find where everything was, such as the bathrooms, dining hall and the pavilion. The camp had boundaries such as we couldn’t go past the creek, cabins or cattle guard. After thirty minutes of unpacking and exploring it was time for dinner. Dinner was at 6:00, breakfast at 8:00, and lunch at 12:30. The whole camp was space themed so the cabins had planet names. M...

Parts of Big Sandy flooded during the last storm. Mayor Shaud Schwarzbach reported, "It was a bad gate valve on the states culvert. We used to be able to slow water down, but it wouldn't work. They will be talking to the state on Monday to see if the city can buy a new one or see who really owns it." They had to start pumping it back over the dike to help get that part back on dry ground. "It was a 50-100 year event that nobody could have planned for. I feel terrible for the people, but not...

A local benefit for Charlie Putnam (Chelsea Brown's husband), a farrier and roper who had a life-altering ATV accident, will be held on Saturday, July 13th, at 5:00 p.m. at the Jerry Martin Memorial Hall in Big Sandy. The Big Sandy Library has been buzzing with excitement this summer, with a multitude of kids and adults enthusiastically participating in our reading program. We've got something for everyone, with children's activities at 1:00 on Mondays and 11:00 on Tuesdays, followed by a delightful story time on...

New MontGuide Available on Nutrient Uptake Timing by Crops A new MontGuide is available to assist producers with fertilizing decisions. The guide was written by Clain Jones, Extension Soil Fertility Specialist and Professor, Kathrin Olson-Rutz, former Research Associate, and Pariera Dinkins, former Research Associate. Timing the application of nutrients so that they are available before peak crop nutrient demand is critical. Adequate nutrients early in the growing season are necessary to maximize yield and ensure nitrogen (N) and phosphorus...

On Thursday, June 6th, I ordered the 500,000th burger at the Roadhouse Diner in Great Falls. For being the customer who ordered the landmark sandwich, I received a trophy commemorating the occasion, free meals for a year, and a "Half-A-Million Burgs and Counting" tote full of Roadhouse merchandise. The event was covered by KRTV and a segment appeared on the evening news that day. I am genuinely humbled that I got to be a part of the milestone day for the Roadhouse. A lot of people have...

A June 14th political meet and greet with Tim Sheehy, candidate for U.S. Senator, was at Big Sandy's The Mint. It was a good turnout, but The Mint was not full. He went around the room completely, shaking everyone's hands before he spoke for about 20 minutes. Tim answered a few questions before he left for Fort Benton. I asked him for a quick statement, and he said, "You bet! America is at a crossroads between open border inflation, interest rates, and foreign policy disasters. We have to make s...

Big Sandy Activity Center has received a new van three years after starting the grant application with the Montana Department of Transportation. The delivery of the van was delayed by various issues related to the pandemic and supply chain problems. The agency has also acquired a new van for running clients to appointments. The newly arrived vehicles are a much needed addition to the Activity Center transportation fleet. Heather Pleninger, who is the director of the agency, explained why the...

(Editor's note: This took place one month ago, but for those participating, an article they can cut out and place in a scrapbook is important.) Parker Yirsa played Home on the Range, a duet with Marla and Valse Scherzo. Bridger Keane played Mist on the Lake. Peyton Sant played Do You Ears Hang Low. For the last few months, special planning meetings have taken place among the staff to help ensure a smooth transition. As they continue to work through the upcoming changes, it is important you know how this changes the process for you, the...

The Mountaineer is 114 years old and faces changes, which should be evident to all. The Havre Daily/Chronicle has decided it will no longer print the Big Sandy Mountaineer nor, for that matter, its own paper. It will be outsourced as well. Bozeman will be printing the Mountaineer at almost two times the cost I previously paid. We still need to find out the timeline, but we hope it will be similar to what we are doing now. The format has changed because of the paper's size, so please be patient w...

The Montana Army National Guard performed drills in the Big Sandy area over the last week and into the weekend. Their presence in the fields on the edge of the Big Sandy Airport is part of their annual field exercises, which typically account for 5 or 6 days of their two weeks of total trainings every year. Locals couldn't help but notice the camp set up on Judith Landing Road or hear the helicopter flying in the area throughout the day and into the night. Captain Kyle Sampson. who I spoke with...

Have you ever gotten a bill in the mail from Big Sandy Medical Center (BSMC) or another medical facility and thought to yourself, ‘what in the world does this mean?’ Chances are, you have probably had a thought similar more than once. The medical billing system in American healthcare is confusing from the beginning to the end of the process, but that doesn’t mean it should be totally foreign to you. The billing department at BSMC has been working hard in the last few years to streamline the process, prevent errors, and make it easier for the p...

Of all patriotic holidays, Memorial Day is the most powerful for me. A veteran came up to me at the program and asked why more people didn't come. He was hurt and said, "I guess I'm just old fashion." There is just something about this holiday that brings tears to my eyes. The first stop is the breakfast put on by the Big Sandy Historical Society. It's a great breakfast, and everyone can sit around and visit while waiting for the parade. Every year, the parade is getting better. I remember...

The City received a $40,000 grant from the DNRC and the Hospital received a grant from the MT Facility Finance Authority for $25,000, which requires a $5,000 match from the Hospital. Ron Wiens, CEO of Big Sandy Medical Center said "with the medical center's campus expanding to include the...

All Montanans deserve access to library services that meet their needs. The public library standards identify a base level of service that residents and visitors should receive wherever they are in Montana. To be eligible for state funding, libraries must meet the public library standards. One standard currently being focused on by the Chouteau County library system is number 8: "The public library board, in consultation with the director, shall identify in writing what they want to accomplish i...
Memorial Day weekend visitors stopped in from Malta, Havre and Great Falls. They enjoyed watching our popular video of the Montana Picnic in New York’s Central Park, took our “tour,” and found books and records in our big collection. A few personal words about this newspaper.T he Mountaineer has been a vital part of our local culture since 1911. One seldom recognized service is the space provided or people to express best wishes and “Thank You” notices of all kinds. “I Wonder” if our children (among others) should be encouraged to give thanks f...
