    Big Sandy Schools is participating in Red Ribbon Week this week, an annual event where schools work to inform students of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. Dianna Keane, the school counselor, is organizing this year’s activities.     Big Sandy High School shop class has been busy preparing for a subterranean geothermal greenhouse, given to Big Sandy by a grant from Northwest Farm Credit Services.   • Angel Basket Program Helps Families in Need

    The Chouteau County Angel Basket Program provides in-need families with food for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, as well as Christmas gifts for children in the homes. The deadline for signing up is November 1st and it is approaching quickly. For years, the program has provided families in our area with groceries, a gift certificate, ham and beef roasts, and (sometimes in years past) turkeys.     The Pioneer football team had a tough game in Chester this last weekend against CJI, losing 16-54, making it their first loss of the season. The Pioneers struggled with some missed tackles during the game as well as losing Sam Cox, Cooper Taylor and Karter Jurenka to injuries throughout the game.     This last week, the Lady Pioneer volleyball team played a very tough Lady Miner team in Big Sandy. Centerville ended up winning in 5 sets, but let me tell you, these Lady Pioneers are so much fun to watch. I love watching them because they show true heart.     Long-time Lewistown resident Joanne Marie (Main) Jenkins peacefully passed away on Monday, October 16, 2023, of natural causes. Joanne, 84, was born October 3, 1939, in Harlem, Montana, to John Main and Agnes Marie Packer. She spent her growing up years in Havre where she attended St. Jude's Catholic School. In 1956 Joanne moved to Big Sandy, and it was there she met the love of her life, Jerry Jenkins. They were married in 1957 and remained so for 61 years, until Jerry passed away in 2018.... Full story

    Dora Frieda Mahood, 94, passed away on October 10, 2023. She was born on September 22, 1929 to Anna Dallman Goecks Knutson and Walter Fredrich Goecks. The family moved to Grandpa Goecks farm out at Kennilworth during the Depression, but moved back to Big Sandy when Dora started school. Her father died in an accident working on the Loma bridge in 1936. Her mother remarried Melford Knutson in 1938. Growing up, Dora enjoyed school.
