  • American Legion Coyote Derby was a grand success

    Lindsay Boyce|Jan 19, 2022

Another year of calving is just around the corner for many in the Big Sandy community and around Montana. The Big Sandy American Legion Coyote Derby started as an idea in 2017 by Mason Ophus, Stephen Boyce and Clete Ophus. A good opportunity to fundraise for a local organization and help the local ranchers with reducing the depredation issues that coyotes present during calving and lambing season. While ranchers are up for hours on end, monitoring and caring for their livestock during this...

    Erik Sietsema|Jan 19, 2022

The Big Sandy Choir traveled to Bozeman this week to make a second appearance on PBS as a part of a fundraising program that features high school choirs from around the state. TJ Bond, Big Sandy's music teacher, explained the course of events that followed the 2019 appearance: They didn't do it last year due to the pandemic. But this year, they really wanted to do it, not just for the fundraiser, but also to get everyone's spirits back into the music. Very specifically, they really enjoyed our...

Agricultural Testing Facility in Chinook Many Chouteau County producers are sending samples to the new agricultural testing facility in Chinook. Because of its location, producers can get test results back in a couple of days rather than a week or 10 days. Information below came from an article published in the Blaine County Journal. North Border Analytics opened its facility on the north side of Chinook. The business performs testing and assessment for soil, water, forage and grain samples. Dr. Brian Grebliunas, the owner, says the local lab...

  • The Great Reading Race has begun

    Erik Sietsema|Jan 19, 2022

The Big Sandy Public Library is hosting a great race this year. This race will not see its competitors traveling around the world, but rather they will be exploring the world through the pages of books. The race pits the librarians and subs against library patrons to see who can finish reading more books throughout the calendar year. I spoke to Darlene Cline, Big Sandy’s Librarian, on the 6th day of the contest. The librarians held a commanding lead over the patrons 21 to 16. Within the space of a week, more patrons joined the competition, resu...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Jan 19, 2022

Our oldest has been playing trumpet for several years in the school band. My wife loved marching band as a student and has taken the opportunity to give him lessons. It has the benefit of helping him play better, and it gives her a chance to do something she loves. Watching the pair over the last few years, it is obvious that they love playing together… most of the time. Sometimes, their music lessons lack harmony. There are times when one or the other is cranky or some particularly difficult to learn song or technique comes up. In those instan...

  • The Road Trip-The Planning

    Ann Denning|Jan 19, 2022

Well, here we are all hunkered down again in the cold and nastiness of winter. To cheer you up, I thought I would relate a true story. Hopefully, you will get a laugh out of this, even if it’s at my expense. This first article is laying the groundwork, so to speak; the next two will give you your laughs and chuckles at my expense. It all began in Arizona. I was living alone on an acreage thirty miles from the school I was working at. My husband had been killed in a hit-and-run accident, so I was a Lone Ranger. I had horses, dogs, cats, and t...

The Pioneers faced up against 9C opponent the Turner Tornadoes on Friday evening. To start the contest, the Pioneers would start the game slow through the first few minutes of play, but quickly the defense started getting stops, and the offense started to click; at the end of one-quarter of play, the Pioneers jumped out in front of the Tornadoes 19-11. The hot shooting would continue in the second quarter of the contest as the Pioneers would knock down four threes in the quarter and tally a 29-point quarter jumping the lead out to 25 with a sco...

    Ella Jurenka|Jan 19, 2022

With a new and improved look, the Lady Pioneers took the floor with class, wearing new warm-ups (sponsored by Jurenka Farms) and their game face on. They came out determined and ready to play basketball. This season has been one of growth for the Lady Pioneers. They have displayed their youth in losses but have shown what they are capable of in their wins, and Friday night, they played a physical battle on both ends of the court. The Lady Pioneers jumped out to an impressive start outscoring the Tornadoes 16-0 in the first 4 minutes of play. Th...
