  • Congratulations Bears!

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 13, 2024

Big Sandy wants to support our nearby small town and its efforts at bringing home a state championship! Congratulations to the Box Elder Bears and their boys' basketball team on going undefeated this season with a very impressive record of 26-0! After visiting with other people who know more about basketball than I do, I was even more impressed by the Bears. After leaving that discussion, I listened to them about what they noticed watching the Bears basketball team, specifically their coach,...

  • History that is still alive

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 13, 2024

Two Big Sandy residents celebrated their 98th birthday recently. They both still live in their homes. Glen Cook and his wife Anita have moved to town to make life a little easier. Ruth Merrill still lives on the land she was born on and lived her entire life. I just wanted to visit with them both for a couple of minutes, especially after I compiled a list of what happened in their lifetime: World War II, Women had just gained the right to vote, the dropping of the first atomic bomb on...

  • Did Easter Really Happen? Part 1

    Erik Sietsema|Mar 13, 2024

With Good Friday and Easter fast approaching, the matter of how to approach these holidays arises for many people in this day and age. Last year, I wrote a series of articles looking at the various easter traditions that have arisen over the last 2,000 years. This year, I will be digging into the events of Good Friday and Easter in order to ask: Is this thing real? Did it really happen? Is it just an Iron Age superstition? The answers to these questions are of huge importance in terms of how we operate as a society and conduct our personal...

Helping You Prepare for the Gardening Season Believe it or not, the gardening season will be upon us before we know it. Below are a few gardening facts to help you prepare for the upcoming season. • Soil tests should be taken in the garden every three years. • The best time to collect a soil sample is in the spring after soil thaw. • Fall soil sampling is not recommended because nitrogen in the soil is depleted during the fall and winter seasons. • Do not work soil when it is wet. If the soil sticks to the shovel, wait a few more days. • The n...

  • 2023 Volleyball Season

    Jenny Sant|Mar 13, 2024

It takes notable dedication for students to commit to a sport before school even starts. But that is what every volleyball player at Big Sandy High School did. We started practicing on the 11th of August. School started on the 21st, so we had already had 8 days of practice. Since Big Sandy High School is a class C school, we don’t cut anyone who tries out for the team. On the first and second days of practice, my coach, Brittany McKenney Richard, holds tryouts for the varsity team. So we have to run a mile and do drills to show our setting, p...

  • The resiliency of these girls is the one word

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 13, 2024

Whenever we play a sport, the goal is to win. And it feels great to win; it hurts when we lose. I am a devoted fan of Pioneers sports; I am proud of the winning, but I also know that winning isn't the lesson the girls will take with them into adulthood. Ok, they'll remember the glory days, but more importantly, who they have become in the process. After all, those profound lessons learned during the hard work, the resiliency to never give up, the effort, and the ability to work as a team will...

    Mar 13, 2024

What a great season for our Lady Pioneers! If you have followed them all year, you will know that these girls showed true heart all season, especially in making it to the state tournament! The ladies’ amazing season did come to an unfortunate end this past weekend, but no one should be hanging their heads because what these ladies accomplished this season is something to be proud of! “Travis Baumann wrote, “Leading up to State, we had a wonderful time with each school and the community. On Wednesday, the Senior Center made the girls lunch...
