  • Kenzie Kallenberger signs with MSU-Northern Rodeo

    Zoe Merrill|Apr 16, 2025

Big Sandy Pioneer Senior Kenzie Kallenberger will join the Women's Skylight Rodeo Team at MSU-Northern next year. Kenzie received a scholarship, something she has been wanting for 12 years! I spoke with her by phone as she returned from a college rodeo in Bozeman! Kenzie can't wait to participate. "I'm so excited. I've wanted to be a part of the rodeo team." We talked about how the team did, and although I've watched rodeo for years, I realized I didn't know much about how a college rodeo team...

  • Big Sandy Band Scores Big at District Festival

    Erik Sietsema|Apr 16, 2025

The Big Sandy High School's Music Program had an exceptional showing at last weekend's District Music Festival in Havre. Our full band and choir scored perfect ratings in all areas of competition for the first time in many years, and a large number of our students will be going on to the state level competition. The Music Festival is the band and choir equivalent of regional competitions for sports teams. Soloists and ensembles perform for the opportunity to move on to the state competitions in...

Lawn Management Information Below are a few reminders for lawn management in 2025 growing season. • Rough bluegrass is probably the best grass in Montana for shady areas. • Kentucky bluegrass is the best grass for open sunny areas with well-drained soil. • Annual ryegrass can be used as a cover crop following vegetable production. • The standard lawn mix is 60% Kentucky bluegrass, 30% creeping red fescue and 10% annual ryegrass. • Zoysiagrass does not grow well in Montana. Montana summers are not warm enough for warm-season grasses. • Lawn re...

  • Personal Records broke a track meet

    Apr 16, 2025

This past weekend the Pioneer track meet went to Choteau and competed against 24 other teams in nice 65 degree temperatures, but also with wind. Just a reminder that I will only share those that placed in the top 10, or had a PR (personal record). This was a very big track meet, for example, there were 112 boys in the 100 meter run! The Pioneers had a tremendous meet just look at all the Personal Records! • Thoughts with Zoe

    Zoe Merrill|Apr 16, 2025

Shiver Brains, a local children's music group, played in Havre Saturday night with members Henry and Dorothea Merrill, Levon Myers, Liam Simpson, and their mentor, Christ Myers. So yes, I love watching the kids play, but so much more ran through my mind. Saturday was special because every song played had to be ordinary songs written by the musicians themselves. Nathan, my son, has always loved music. On Saturday, he played a song he wrote, and for the first time, his son Henry played the drums...

  • Letter to the editor

    Apr 16, 2025

Hello Pioneers! My name is Shon Tester and I’m one of the many leading you along the roads of our towns past, present, and future. There was an immense sense of pioneer pride when the homecoming committee asked me to be in charge of the homecoming program. It came with some laughter and of course, a cathartic bittersweet. I realize I now fill the shoes of the late Rusty Danreuther (1973), one of the great directors of our past homecoming programs. So the question that now begs to be asked: what type of program will Shon Tester (2004) do? W...
