  • 2025 Homecoming, proved "all roads do lead home"

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 25, 2025

I'm not from Big Sandy. Yes, I have lived here for 53 years, but Homecoming is for those who grew up here, making lifelong friends from childhood. However, I enjoyed Homecoming this year. I spent my time taking pictures of the evenst and listening to conversations. I'm sorry I wasn't trying to eavesdrop. It's hard not to hear conversations. Genuine laughter, hugs galore. Even the kids of former residents talked to me about how they were enjoying the weekend. Big Sandy folks, you did an...

    Erik Sietsema|Jun 25, 2025

The Big Sandy Community Theater put on two showings of the one act play The Big Sandy by Mike Hesford of Boulder, MT. The play tells the story of the Big Sandy Cornfield Bomber from the perspective of a fictional collection of local residents. The Friday and Saturday shows were well attended, in particular drawing two special guest attendees: Gary Foust, the pilot of the F-106, and Mike Hesford, the author of the play. The production was also special for several other reasons. The presence of Ga...

  • Brittany Richard continues winning with the volleyball program

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 25, 2025

Brittany Richard, Big Sandy's head volleyball coach, recently held a summer volleyball camp. I went over to the big sandy gym to watch the enthusiasm. The camp was held one week before homecoming. There were 23 second through sixth graders present and 17 seventh through 12th graders. Brittany was happy with the turnout, "I am, especially with that younger group. That's a lot of kids. We're missing quite a few of our high school kids." She acknowledges it happens with summer. "It makes a big...

Hailed Out and Emerged Volunteer Wheat Should be Sprayed Immediately after Harvest Information for this article was compiled from a Kansas State University Press Release in 2016. Producers often wait several weeks after harvest before making their first herbicide application to control volunteer wheat,” said Dallas Peterson, K-State Research and Extension Weed Management Specialist. “This allows as much volunteer as possible to emerge before spraying it or tilling it the first time. Often, a second application or tillage operation will be neede...

  • Lotus Energy at Elevating Grains

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 25, 2025

As I have gotten older, my energy levels have depleted. I’m sure it’s due to getting older, but also my own poor choices in terms of what I eat and what I don’t do in terms of exercise. I’ve drank energy drinks, just hoping to find one that isn’t bad for me. Energy drinks have been around for centuries and have continued to gain popularity over the years. What started as a medicinal tonic approach to an energy boost for the working class has evolved into a morning, afternoon, and evening ritual every bit as crowd-pleasing and relied upon as y...

  • Love this community

    Michael Wright|Jun 25, 2025

One of the things I love most about living in Big Sandy is that it is a community-focused town. I love that in this town, I feel welcomed and a part of the community. I could be walking downtown, and people always wave or say hi to me. As human beings, we are meant to be there for one another; communities are built on friendships and mutual respect. Kindness always goes a long way in a person’s day - you never know what someone is going through! Visiting the Big Sandy Library is a great way to connect with the community. The Big Sandy L...
