  • Big Sandy Organics wins Trail Mix Competition

    Erik Sietsema|Nov 9, 2022

Big Sandy Organics won the Albertsons Trail Mix Competition during this year's Boise Entrepreneur Week. Winning the competition brings a $50,000 prize and shelf space at Albertsons Supermarkets. Heather Dilworth, who owns the company with her husband, Thomas, explained the road that brought them to this recent win. "We went through some challenges this year. We had 11 employees earlier this year, and we had to lay every single one of them off, except for my husband and me." All of that began by...

  • How the Big Sandy Football Team Prevails

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 9, 2022

It is important to realize just how good our Pioneer Football team is. We need to celebrate the accomplishments and dedication it has taken to get where they are! But let's be honest, the others have been easy up to last week's game; they hadn't had any real competition. I wanted to know how they stayed hungry. What kept them giving their best week after week? So I invited the four senior captains, Lance Rutledge, Rusty Gasvoda, Braydon Cline, and Kody Strutz, to the Big Sandy teacher's lounge...

  • Halloween festivies at the Schools

    Erik Sietsema|Nov 9, 2022

FE Miley Elementary students enjoyed a special Halloween treat this year thanks to the High School Student Council, the National Honor Society, and the initiative of Jessie Jaramillo (the art teacher and class sponsor). Halloween at FE Miley is always a big day, with both the students and teachers showing up dressed in costume, class parties planned for the afternoon, and concluding with the parade from the elementary school to the nursing home for trick-or-treating. This year, an addition of...

Cropping Questions and Answers to the Chouteau County Extension Office I have a prickly lettuce problem in my farm ground. Is it an annual? Prickly lettuce is a biennial and a winter annual. Do we have herbicide resistance in prickly lettuce in Chouteau County? Tim Siepel, MSU cropland weed specialist has tested prickly lettuce that is 2,4 D resistant. The plants came from the Geraldine area. He has seen glyphosate resistance in the greenhouse. Greenhouse plants are soft plants and will take in herbicides much more readily than a plant growing...

  • What's Been Happening at the Jeff Reichelt Memorial Library

    Nov 9, 2022

Big Sandy’s Friends of the Library met at the library on October 28, 2022, primarily to discuss our plans for the upcoming Christmas Stroll. As has been the practice for past Strolls, the library will be open Saturday, December 3, from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. Darlene and Rachel will have fun activities for the youngsters, and the Friends will be providing hot cider, coffee, and tasty treats! Once again, we will have several basket raffles with many cool gifts to keep or to give. Also, we will be adding a Silent Auction of some special items. If y...

  • Pioneer Pen

    Dan Schrock|Nov 9, 2022

“Teamwork Makes The Dream Work” This past weekend I had the good fortune and opportunity to witness the community of Big Sandy rally together in support of our school and its football program. The kindness and generosity of those in Big Sandy was on full display for the benefit of others. Big Sandy, like most of northeastern Montana on Saturday, experienced 60 plus mph wind gusts. The force of those gusts knocked power out in our community for quite some time. Within a couple of minutes of the power going out, our Athletic Director gave me a c...

  • A Friend is worth Thanking!

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 9, 2022

Thanksgiving is a great time to thank friends. Real friends, not Facebook kind of friends. The type of friends that have lasted through trials, temptations, and disagreements. Nona Danreuther and I have been friends for more than 46 years. At first, we had a lot in common. Now we just know each other. She knows my shortcomings, my failures, how I think, and what I like. Mainly after so many years, I know I could call her anytime, and she would be there. And she tells me the truth, not some...

  • Pioneers Outlast Rebels in QuarterFinal 25-20

    Tucker Taylor|Nov 9, 2022

Faced with a howling wind and down senior playmaker Kody Strutz due to a broken collarbone sustained early in the 1st quarter, the Pioneers scored first in the quarterfinal showdown. Braydon Cline found paydirt on a 15 yard score to put Big Sandy up 6-0 with 1:12 left in the opening quarter. The Pioneer defense would force a fumble on the Rebels ensuing possession. Braydon Cline would rush for his second touchdown of the half on a 47 yard carry that was aided by good blocking from his teammates....

Big Sandy Pioneer Volleyball players were ready to play at Divisionals! Their first game was against the Belt Huskies who went on to take first place. They lost to Belt in three. Friday they played against Chouteau County rivals the Highwood Mountaineers. Brittney McKenney wrote, "I am beyond proud of this team. These girls gave it everything they had, and then a little bit more. They put on a show at the Divisional tournament. We BATTLED HARD in a 4 set match with Highwood. Scores were 23-25,...
