The first week of school is in the books, and Principal Heather Wolery is pleased with how smoothly things have gone so far. Though many things are different about the school day due to the new regulations and guidelines, students and teachers have adapted well. This was not an inevitable outcome, but came as a result of hard work on the part of the school administration and the cooperation of the staff, students, and their families. Returning to school with worries about the Covid 19 pandemic...

I was first given this story by one of the Big Sandy High School neighbors because they saw Gwen Kane out there working fixing up the chair-saw Pioneer by the school parking lot. I immediately went and found Gwen working on the statue again and asked her if I could interview her. She laughed like she always does, and then said, "after the project was finished." It took three and a half weeks, not all day nor in the heat of the day, but she worked on it till the sun went down. Five years ago,...
Rejuvra™, active ingredient indaziflam, has received approval by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use on rangeland, CRP land, and natural areas, including grazed areas on these sites. Indaziflam was previously marketed as Esplanade™; the new label for Esplanade™ will restrict its use to industrial vegetation management. Rejuvra™ is a pre-emergent herbicide used for control of annual grasses like cheatgrass, Japanese brome, ventenata and medusahead. It reduces emergence of seedlings through inhibition of cellulose biosynt...

As the pandemic continues to change our day to day lives, the Big Sandy Medical Center has been hit extra hard by the quarantine. Because the residents are so vulnerable to the virus, the home has taken extraordinary steps to ensure their safety. This has resulted in an extended time of isolation from the community, family, friends, and visitors. This has made Entertainment Director Lisa Sipler's job especially important. Entertainment in nursing facilities is extra important right now because...

A meeting of the Big Sandy’s Town Council was held on the evening of August 13. They were juggling many topics and concerns for the town of Big Sandy. An added facet of conducting a meeting occurred when there was a need to do a Zoom conference due to three people unable to attend in person. After a few tweaks of the system, they were up and running, with everyone participating in discussion and votes. There was no Deputy Sheriff’s report. All is quiet on the home front at this time. However, Dennis Hale was applauded for dispatching a rat...
The Covid-19 pandemic continues to create chaos in the world of sports. Despite the recent cancellations or postponements of most college seasons, most high schools across the state remain committed to pressing forward with a fall season. Three of the Montana schools in hardest-hit regions of the state canceled their football seasons: St. Labre, Lodge Grass, and Northern Cheyenne (6-man southern division). The Montana 6-Man football league recently voted by an overwhelming margin to change their traditional 9-week regular-season schedule to a...

The Big Sandy Homecoming 2020 was postponed until next year due to Covid, but this year we will be celebrating a different sort of homecoming. This September the world's largest tractor will be returning to the Williams' Farm after spending 10 years on the road. The Big Bud 747 first left Big Sandy to attend a farm show in Illinois. The Williams Brothers, who own the Big Bud 747, had initially intended to bring the tractor to a few more farm shows around the country, but the demands of running...

The Board of Trustees of Triangle Telephone Cooperative Association, doing business as Triangle Communications (Triangle), had previously voted to hold two annual meetings in October of this year. Triangle was very excited to host a north meeting in Havre and a south meeting in Big Timber which would allow even more of our membership to participate in the business side of the cooperative. However, due to the increase in COVID cases throughout the State of Montana; the Board has made the difficult decision to cancel our annual meetings at both...
The complete plan is almost 6,000 words covering all three phases, which makes it impossible for the Big Sandy Mountaineer to publish it in its entirety. I have chosen portions of the plan to print, but Kelly Haaland would like everyone to know, especially parents, that the complete plan is available for you on the new FaceBook page: Big Sandy Schools and on : bigsandy.k12.mt.us. The Pandemic Coordinator is Mr. Kelly Haaland, with the Pandemic Team of Heather Wolery, Charlie Sipler, and Melanie Schwarzbach. Since we are currently in Phase 2,...
Information for this article was taken from a Kansas State University Press Release. The entire article is located at www.ag.ksu.edu. Producers often wait several weeks after harvest before making their first herbicide application to control volunteer wheat,” said Dallas Peterson, K-State Research and Extension weed management specialist. “This allows as much volunteer as possible to emerge before spraying it or tilling it the first time. Often, a second application or tillage operation will be needed later in the summer to eliminate the green...

This September, I will be riding to raise money to fight Children's Cancer in the Great Cycle Challenge. The Great Cycle Challenge was founded in 2015 and is one of the biggest cycling events in the United States. Working with the Children's Cancer Research Fund, the challenge has raised nearly $25,000,000 in support of research, the development of better treatments, and the search for a cure for childhood cancers. Participants have ridden a total of 18,831,310 miles in their fundraising...
Big Sandy will soon have a new basketball court. The crumbling and cracked concrete of the existing courts at the FE Miley Elementary School has been removed. A new, larger, 40 x 80 feet court will replace it. The court will have 2 sets of basketball hoops with steel backboards, one set at the 8 feet height, and the other at regulation, 10 feet height. A repositionable net will be set at mid-court so that tennis, badminton, and volleyball can be played on the concrete as well. The court can be utilized as an area for outdoor learning once schoo...

The Montana online library service, Library 2 Go, is a useful service that many Big Sandy locals have grown to love. This was especially the case during quarantine when trips to the library were shut down and trips to book stores were fewer and farther between. Library 2 Go (or Libby, which is the name of one of the apps) is an online library service providing nearly 16,000 titles in audio and e-books available to anyone with a library card, an internet connection, and a means of listening or...

I approached the parking lot of Big Sandy Church of God, watching as cars quickly filled the parking lot and the roadside. Half a dozen volunteers run to cars carrying boxes of food and checking names off the official count list. The food distribution is part of a program that is providing relief to communities across the country during the COVID lockdown. For the past nine weeks, the Farmers To Families Food Box Program has been distributing food boxes to Big Sandy families, providing needed...
• Water trees three times a month in addition to watering your lawn. • Deep watering to a depth of 12” inches below the soil surface is recommended. Saturate the soil around the tree within the “dripline” (the outer edges of the tree’s branches) to disperse water down toward the roots. • For evergreens, water 3’-5’ beyond the dripline on all sides of the tree. • The objective is to water slowly, dispersing the flow of water to get the water deep down to the trees roots. Watering for short periods of time only encourages shallow rooting whi...
Quick Pickles Maybe canning cucumbers for pickles is not for you but you still have those fresh cucumbers? An easy alternative is to make quick pickles in the refrigerator. Great tasting, very easy and ready in a few hours! Try this recipe for a different twist on the traditional refrigerator pickles: 3/4 cup seasoned rice vinegar 1/4 cup water 1 garlic clove, peeled and halved 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric 1/8 teaspoon black peppercorns 1/8 teaspoon yellow mustard seeds 8 ounces pickling cucumbers*, ends trimmed, sliced ¼ inch thick 2 sprigs...

Big Bud has gotten a shiny new pair of shoes, or more accurately: four new pairs of tires. The World's Largest Tractor, which calls Big Sandy home, was outfitted with brand new tires for the first time since it rolled off the assembly line in 1977. The update comes as the Big Bud 747 is undergoing preparations for its trip home later this year. One of the tractor's 8 tires had gone flat while it was on display. Attempts to repair it revealed that the 40-year old set of custom made construction...
Nelson Mandela once said, “There is no keener revelation of a society’s soul than in the way in which it treats its children.” Child Sex trafficking is an ugly secret that many in America refuse to accept, or acknowledge. Human Trafficking is a 150-billion-dollar industry. It is the fastest criminal enterprise in the world recently surpassing the illegal drug trade. There are an estimated 30 million people trapped by it today. Slavery was not abolished in 1865. There are more slaves today then there has ever been at one time in all of histo...
At the regular Big Sandy School Board meeting, they once again visited about how best to open the schools. However, before that, the Student Council asked permission to have a dunk tank at the Fall Kick off to help them raise funds. They realized that the Fall Kick-Off is not a sure thing, but was hoping if there was a Kick-Off that they could receive permission to rent one from Great Falls. The board decided that it was an administrative decision. The Building Maintenance Projects that are finished are the ditch beside the gym is completed, si...

On a snowy Monday morning in March, Covid-19 disrupted an aspect of my life, and the lives of many other locals, in a way that has forced me to innovate and adapt daily: the High School gym shut down. For years, I have rolled out of bed before the sunrise and trudged the 3 blocks to the school to workout. One of the hidden treasures of our community is a well-equipped workout facility that rivals many paid gyms I’ve visited. Even better is the astonishing fact that the gym was available to l...

The Big Sandy City Council met Monday night to vote on whether to move forward with the Big Sandy Barracudas’ request to hold a swim meet in Big Sandy on July 25-26th. Before the vote could take place, the Barracudas coach, Travis Baumann told the council that the team had decided that holding a meet here in town was not worth the risk of potentially exposing the community to Coronavirus. Three cases have been confirmed in Chouteau County as of the writing of this article. A fourth case would require that the swim meet attendees wear masks, p...
