  • New Teacher at Big Sandy Elementary, Devyn Poser

    Robert Lucke|Sep 13, 2017

There is nothing more important in any community than the education of its young people. And, it is also true that there is nothing more important to any community then getting the very best teachers available in any year. This year in Big Sandy, there are four new full time teachers and Bridgette Long who is teaching one period of Spanish each school day. We wish these new teachers well and hope that they find living in Big Sandy is an adventure in good neighbors and dear hearts. Following are...

  • Big Sandy: Small School, Big Potential

    Big Sandy Students|Sep 13, 2017

Times are changing, people are changing, our education system is changing, but we are learning and growing right along with it. As members of the student body at Big Sandy High School, in a dual credit education class, we took it upon ourselves to take a closer look at the true climate in Big Sandy High School after a recently published Havre Daily News article provided a nearly negative outlook on our learning environment. In our dual credit class we are learning the proper ways to shape young...

    robert Lucke|Sep 13, 2017

Darlene Cline is the new librarian at the Jeff Reichelt Memorial Library in Big Sandy. She took over as head librarian on July 31. Darlene knows her way around the library as she helped out with story time at the library and when she was young and lived on a ranch outside of Bynum, she spent much time in the library just doing her homework. Darlene was raised in Bynum on a cattle ranch on the Rocky Mountain Front and she still misses those beautiful mountains to look at each day. She does not...

  • Chards and Buldozers: Fathers and sons never change

    Robert Lucke|Sep 13, 2017

When the Bear Paw East Fork was raging a friend brought a lot of equipment to the Bear Paws to help fight the fire. He also brought his eight year old boy. That first hot, windy night, the friend was told to build a fire line for several miles with his bulldozer. His eight year old son got on a smaller bulldozer and to the amazement of everyone watching, took off after his dad to help with the fire line. They had portable radios and so at the home base, listeners heard things like the father say, “How are you doing buddy?” “Just fine Dad, my ga...

Factors Affecting Wheat Germination and Stand Establishment in Hot Soils Hot soil conditions at sowing also reduce coleoptile length. The coleoptile is a rigid, protective structure that covers the emerging shoot to aid it in reaching the soil surface. Once the coleoptile breaks the soil surface, it stops grow¬ing and the first true leaf emerges. If the coleoptile does not emerge through the soil surface, the first true leaf emerges below ground, takes on an accordion-like appearance, and the wheat plant typically dies. For this reason, wheat...

  • Hunters, recreationists have several resources for fire and restriction information

    Sep 13, 2017

As hunters and other recreationists enjoy late summer in Montana, fire safety will be a critical part of a safe trip. Montana is parched. Some parts of the state have seen little rain all summer long. More than 40 active wildfires are currently listed on federal incident management website for the state of Montana. Many other, smaller fires, are being managed on a local level. And still the dry weather, heat and smoke persist. Being knowledgeable about current restrictions and fire safe behavior will help prevent more wildfires as hunting seaso...

  • Traditionally Labor Day heralds a new Season

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

Labor Day was just last Monday. Traditionally it is the end of the glorious summer and picnic season. It is a time to go back to work, back to school and make plans for a winter season that is just around the corner. To honor Labor Day this year we include three of Doug Giebel's pictures of a picnic at the Sheepsheds on the IX ranch around 1918. What makes these pictures great is not just all the detail but the fact that they were pictures belonging to Dan Cushman, one of Montana's most famous...

  • Long teaches Spanish

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

Superintendent Moore calls Bridgette Long one seventh of a teacher. Bridgette is a new teacher at Big Sandy Junior High teaching Spanish. She teaches one period out of seven a day, hence one seventh of a teacher. Actually Superintendent Moore is very happy to have Bridgette as a foreign language teacher is needed in Montana schools and Bridgette fits the bill very well. Bridgette did not learn Spanish at Big Sandy High School where she graduated and went through all twelve grades. She went to...

  • Sperry Chalet burned Bear Paw Fire is looking better

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

There was big fire news on two fronts last week. The East Fork fire led by a wind from hell got out of containment and went every which way all week long. Monday, September 4 was the first time in over a week that there was not a smoke smell on the prairie and a person could see all the way to Baldy from US 87. The fire started on the Warrick road just before getting to the Dumas summer ranch. From there it went into reservation for a little way but mainly roared down Little Box Elder Creek. Seldom did the fire get west of Beaver Creek and it...

  • Drought Hurts Fish, Too

    Bruce Auchly|Sep 6, 2017

When drought and the accompanying heat hits, attention tends to focus on withering crops, explosive wildfires and subsoil moisture. While those drought-caused problems are obvious, creatures that spend their lives underwater and out of sight can suffer as well. If a stream bed dries up, of course, fish don’t do well. But even before that final step, higher temperatures and reduced stream flow hurt. The Smith River south of Great Falls is a good example. “This has been a particularly tough year on the Smith,” said Grant Grisak, Fish, Wildl...

  • From The Mayor's Desk

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

The regular August City Council meeting was held on August 10th. The Pledge was recited, minutes were approved, there were no public comments and there was one visitor. There was no Sheriff’s report. Concerning the new water project, several calls have been made to Rural Development and it looks like it is funded and headed for a spring start up. Before that can happen there will have to be some public meetings to let people know what is happening. The Brown Field project which concerns the old Service Station in Big Sandy got some bad news w...

  • Kulbeck honors prairie cemetery

    Robert Lucke and Vicki Kulbeck|Aug 30, 2017

Old cemeteries can tell a huge amount of history and are becoming more popular all the time to find out just who lived in what age and in many cases how they died as well. The cemetery at Hungry Hollow just east of Clear Creek is choked with lilacs and among those lilacs are names of children who died of influenza, and old timers who died after one might think they should. The cemeteries in Zortman and Landusky, one choked out with iris, the other in an old growth forest tell many stories. At...

  • Fire Season Update ever changing

    Robert Lucke|Aug 30, 2017

With September just around the corner, the fire season, heat and drought lingers on. It will be with us until the winter snows and let’s just hope that no big fires get started now and that we get a good snow early on to help put out what is raging. Actually it looks like things are a little better at the end of August. The horrible Lolo fire just south of Missoula seems to be getting more under control. Missoula residents said that last week they saw the peak of Mount Lolo for the first time in weeks. Some evacuations have been lifted in t...
