State and local public health officials are reminding Montanans to be aware of the risk for exposure to rabies as summer approaches. From 2009 to 2015, 162 animals submitted for testing to the Montana Department of Livestock (DOL) were positive for rabies. Most of the animals were bats, some were skunks, and a few were other wild and domestic animals. Rabies is a fatal disease. The rabies virus is carried in the saliva of infected warm-blooded mammals and is usually transmitted to people and other animals through a bite. Bats are a great...

This is the story of why we think there are really seven mountains in Glacier National Park higher than ten thousand feet! First, the six. Let’s see if I can remember them and how to spell them. Let’s start with the tallest of all, Mount Cleveland. Then there is Sieyh, Kintla, Merritt, Jackson, and Mount Stimpson. It is Mount Cleveland that gives me troubl...

The Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) reminds Montanans to be aware this spring about the risk of hantavirus. Health officials say that hantavirus infection can occur during any month, but spring and summer months pose the highest risk for exposure as people clean cabins, outbuildings and campers or begin spring and summer recreation activities outdoors and come in contact with mouse and rat nesting materials. “Before you start cleaning garages, sheds or dusting off your camping gear, it is important to look for evidence o...

Even Joe Morelli, the city’s hottest cop, is struggling to find a clue to the suspected killer’s whereabouts. These are...

I recently watched a lecture delivered to a group of hospice workers that was being delivered by a retired teacher who was dealing with terminal cancer. He opened his talk with a quote: “I can complain that the rose bush has thorns, or I can be grateful that the thorn bush has flowers.” It’s a profound statement on its own, but given that it was shared by a gentleman who was living out his last days, dealing with chemotherapy, in failing health, and witnessing his family and friends mourn...

Q: I guess we’re what you’d call “Christmas and Easter Christians,” since those are about the only times we make it to church. But what’s wrong with that? We head to our lake cottage most weekends, and isn’t the Sabbath supposed to be a day of rest? A: You’re right, up to a point; God knows we need rest, and one of the reasons He established the Sabbath was to give us rest. One of the Ten Commandments states, “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day … you shall not do any work” (Deuteronomy 5:13-14). But God’s...

Grow a beautiful flower garden with minimal care by investing a bit of time at the start of the season to reduce on-going care. Always match flowers to the growing conditions and the care you are willing to provide. Low maintenance plants need minimal or no deadheading and staking. This means you’ll be growing good-looking plants with little effort on your part. And if the plants are suited to the growing conditions and resistant to common pests you’ll be doing less work managing insect and disease problems. Further reduce your workload by sele...
One thing is for sure if you talk to perspective employers in Big Sandy, they need more help than they can get their hands on. Take Lorrie Merrill at Big Sandy Activities. She is not shy in sharing her business needs. “There is a huge need here for people to go to work,” commented Merrill. “At Big Sandy Activities I just hired three new employees but I still need two more. I could use as many as eight part time employees.” Merrill said that she can work a schedule most any way a perspective employee wants it so the employee gets the hours t...

Sherri and David Heppner have two sons, Calenn and Casten. Calenn is married to Laura. They have four children, Layten, Levi, Lucy and Landry. Casten is married to Katie. Their children are Bailey, Natalie, Cassie, Paezlee and Austin. That should add up to nine grandchildren and that is what is best about...

Loren Jenkins has given "the Mountaineer" a sheaf of stories written about old timers as a school project many years ago. This week, we feature The Blacksmith by Kevin Skaalure. A few horses, a cow, blacksmith's tools, household goods and furniture filled the "Immigrant Car" from Burton, Wisconsin to Big Sandy, Montana. In the midst of the animals in the shadows of the boxcar, at checkpoints, but keeping Archie company the rest of the way, was a stowaway named Charles Beck. (Later he was to...
Because private wells are not monitored for drinking water quality standards like municipal water sources are, you might want to consider testing your private well water supply. Even if you do have good water quality, routine testing is a good idea to establish a water quality record. If a contaminant problem suddenly appears, it is easier to correlate what the cause is. This is where the Montana Well Educated Program comes in. A kit is available at the Chouteau County Extension Office located at 1308 Franklin St in Fort Benton or by calling 40...
Clearly the grain and cattle sectors of the Montana economy are of significant importance. Climate change that threatens these sectors, poses a serious threat to the overall Montana economy. 3. The Estimated Economic Losses to Agriculture Associated with Climate Change in Montana Both climate change and its agricultural and economic impacts are difficult to calculate. Projections require professional judgement based on the best evidence available. In public policy discussions aimed at reducing human releases of greenhouse gases (GHG) there...
