Many Reasons Why Deciduous Trees Should Not Be Topped Topping is the drastic removal or cutting back of large branches in mature trees. The tree is sheared like a hedge and the main branches are cut to stubs. Many homeowners top trees when they reach heights considered unsafe fearing a strong wind might blow large trees over. However, the extensive root system of a healthy tree provides adequate support for the tree. Below are a number of reasons why deciduous trees should not be topped. Starvation: Trees need leaves to manufacture starches...

  • The world will label, we will love

    Zoe Merrill|Jan 17, 2024

Everyone has personal heroes; one of mine is Karli Phillips. It isn't just because of her spiritual journey and honest vulnerability and not because she and her husband, Glen, have experienced a real miracle in their daughter, Yancy. Not because they opened their home to adopt their niece and nephews after the death of Glen's mom and dad, but because her heart is so gentle and real. Last October, Karli had a life-changing weekend. She went to a Labeled and Loved Sisters Retreat. Karli wrote, "...

Why Should Homeowners Use Registered Herbicide Products on Weeds? This article was written by Noelle Orloff, Associate MSU Extension Specialist and MSU Schutter Lab Diagnostician. We regularly answer questions from people interested in using household products to kill unwanted plants or other organisms. Some of these questions stem from “do-it-yourself” herbicide recipes found online. Others are a result of looking in the kitchen cabinet or garage, and wondering what might happen if a given substance were applied to an unwanted organism. The...

  • BSMC conducting a 2024 Community Health Needs Assessment

    Jessica Ophus|Jan 17, 2024

As a non-profit organization, the IRS requires Big Sandy Medical Center to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) every three years. The CHNA is an opportunity for the members of the community to express their opinions about what is needed in the area, not just to help support their health, but to support the well-being of the community as a whole as well. You can view some of the current assessments from around the state at the Montana Healthcare Foundation’s website. The last time this was performed, residents of the community rec...

  • Check your carbon monoxide testers

    Shane Chauvet|Jan 17, 2024

Please read this. This is important. Everyone should check to make sure they have a couple working carbon monoxide detectors in their house. Erica had put one in the house a couple of years ago. Erica and some of the kids had headaches yesterday. They thought it was just a bug going around. The detector went off last night as we all were going to bed. Changed the batteries and it went off again. I checked my furnace exhaust and it was free flowing. Got another detector as there must be something wrong with the first detector. The second...

  • Big Sandy Schools relaunching Adult Program

    Erik Sietsema|Jan 17, 2024

Big Sandy Schools is relaunching its adult education opportunities for the community. As 2023 drew to a close, the school stepped away from Covid era policies that limited facility usage for the community, which has opened the door for resuming the program. Some classes are already being offered and more are sure to be available as 2024 gets under way. I spoke with Dan Schrock, the school superintendent, about the changes: “We have an adult education levy that we run annually in support of a...

  • Dora Mahood Generous Gift to Big Sandy

    Zoe Merrill|Jan 10, 2024

Dora Mahood blessed Big Sandy by distributing $400,000 for various causes throughout the town. Everyone deserves acknowledgment when the Big Sandy Mountaineer runs obituaries, and I don’t know the person I read about them. Dora Frieda Mahood, 94, passed away on October 10, 2023, and we ran her obituary. I now wish I had an opportunity to visit with her. Dora Mahood gave back in a big way to her hometown. She donated $400,000 in total. The Big Sandy School was given $50 K, and you can read about that in a separate article about that donation i...

  • American Legion's 7th Annual Coyote Derby had 29 teams

    Lindsay Boyce|Jan 10, 2024

The 7th Annual Big Sandy American Legion Coyote Derby started off much better than last year. The weather was chilly, but no snow stopped all the snow mobile participants we typically see. However, it didn't slow down the calling class teams as the number of dogs they brought in in comparison to the open class was pretty crazy. We started the weekend with 29 teams for a total of 98 participants. With the milder than normal weather, not as many coyotes were killed as the previous year but teams...

The Big Sandy Food Bank closed out its calendar year with a generous gift from students at Big Sandy Schools and First Bank of Montana. • Big Sandy Community Amazingly Generous

    Ron Wiens|Jan 3, 2024

Having worked in Big Sandy for over a year now, one thing that continually amazes me is the generosity of the people who call this town home. And by generosity, I’m not just talking about money, but of time. The members of the Rotary Club give countless hours of service to this community so we can have Christmas lights to enjoy downtown and a park in the mountains to recreate, and most recently, an ice-skating rink for kids to play. The hospital Guild volunteers somehow pull together a huge rummage sale every year. Roberta Edwards volunteers c...
