What made you volunteer to be the Big Sandy Pioneer mascot? So I could show people we have bravery, strength, and courage. I wanted to show pride for our teams. How do you feel knowing you're the mascot? I feel amazing. There is something special about being able to show the Pioneers I am there to support them and remind them of who they are. Do you ever get nervous by being in front of such a large crowd? Sometimes I do. I really do not like when the crowd is quiet, but when everyone is...
How Do We Improve Percent Calf Crop Weaned? Percent calf-crop weaned is of paramount economic importance in a cow-calf operation. Selection, mating and management to improve reproductive efficiency are all important areas to improve percent calf-crop weaned. From a standpoint of genetics and animal breeding, reproductive traits are low in heritability (typically 10% - 20%) but show high levels of heterosis in response to crossbreeding. If a producer is going to take advantage of heterosis in one part of the commercial cow-calf operation, take...

It's always the same. A wonderful celebration of Christmas is the Elementary Christmas Concert. This year was the biggest turnout. The auditorium was almost full. It started with the 4th-grade class playing recorders. They played Good King Wenceslas and Snowfall. The 5th grade band, in their very first concert, played Go Tell Aunt Rhody, A Mozart Melody, and Jingle Bells. Every student in the 5th grade must play in the band, so it's a delightful concert with squeaks and squawks. The 6th-grade...

The Big Sandy Library received a grant for $2,650 from Ag West Farm Credit Services. Darlene Cline, Big Sandy Librarian, requested the funds through the Rural Grants program. Darlene requested funds for sewing machines, laptops, and a learning computer. Darlene said, "I'm...

For the past ten years, Mrs. Sheri Moore's third-grade class has taken a break from their social studies textbooks to tackle a different kind of learning. They hop aboard an imaginary airplane to travel around the world to learn about how Christmas is celebrated in other countries. This year, the students will "travel" to 8 different countries, plus the United States, with six countries having special guests present the information. The students learn about each country's foods, traditions,...

Celebrating Christmas is a yearly adventure for Marlys Myers. She has a blast centering her decorations around the 1989 cult comedy National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation movie. She loves the movie and watches it every Christmas. She asked me if I had ever watched it, and I laughed out loud. My children and husband completely memorized that movie. I can't even remember how many times we've watched. So it was a blast walking into a Christmas Vacation celebration. Marlys even told me she has had...

While there may not be much for snow outside, it sure is beginning to look a lot like Christmas over at BSMC. The trees are trimmed, the halls are decorated and the festivities have started. Next week, the Big Sandy Rotary will be carolling inside the facility and the BSHS Choir will be performing a...

WITH A BLINK OF THE EYE THE YEAR HAS COME TO AN END AND CHRISTMAS IS ONLY A FEW WEEKS AWAY. November proved to be a busy month here at the senior center. We started our month with preparations for our Veterans Day lunch. We served roughly 75 meals with half of them being take out meals. Everyone seemed to enjoy the good old rib dinner. We would like to thank Marlys at Agri Prairie for her donation of meals to all veterans. The following week we had a non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner of pork...

It’s time for the tea at BSMC. What a busy couple of months down at the Medical Center! Among normal operations in the kitchen, Johnson Controls was in the building last week to finish installing the sprinkler heads in the new dry storage and walk-in cooler areas. That was the last of the items on the to-do list so the kitchen remodel is officially complete! Progress on the installation of the new generator has been less successful. Northwestern Energy pushed back the date on getting the new 2-inch gas line installed to fuel the machine. H...

This year, Lainey Terry is the only senior on the Lady Pioneer basketball team. One year ago this week, Lainey "ended up tearing my ACL in the very first preseason game last year." It is healed now, but sometimes it just hurts." Laniey said, "I think my team will be going very far this year, and we are just working on getting to that goal." The girl's team has always worked hard. Partly because every girl sees themselves winning and partly because they have a coach who demands they work hard....

Christmas time! For many, it’s a joyous celebration, but for others, it brings difficult memories. For some, it brings both! After interviewing this person, who asked to remain anonymous, I was impressed that she could see the good in difficult times. She loves Christmas! “There’s just something about the music, the weather, the sugary treats, the cheerfulness around you…it’s just all magical! But then, sometimes, it isn’t. Sometimes, Christmas is full of stress, full of just life happening around you and realizing that no matter how hard yo...

December is almost upon us. In my home, the days immediately preceding the final month of the year prompt a barrage of questions from my kids about when we will be handing out the Advent calendars for this year. When I was young, I did the same thing. My mother was a German immigrant and always got the special calendars in the mail from her family in Europe. Every day had a different chocolate treat hidden behind a little door. As a child, I never wondered what Advent was. I always focused on...
Christmas Tree Care When it comes to Christmas tree care during the holidays, the best strategy is to keep it simple. All a tree really needs to maintain freshness is adequate water. The following recommendations will help to maintain the freshness and aroma of a live Christmas tree this holiday season. Use a tree stand that holds enough water for the size of the tree. The rule of thumb is one quart of water per one...
