Tom Mathews, a new Chouteau County resident, has lived in Montana 36 years of the past 40 years. "I was stationed at Malmstrom in 1980, and after orders to Germany, I spent time in Colorado and Florida before moving back to Great Falls in the early '90s." Tom is originally from Clark, NJ, and enlisted in the Air Force right out of high school. Although he has dabbled in art in some form or another ever since he was a young child, " I have been watercolor painting for about 2 1/2 years." Being...

The following is from Seneca Academy in Maryland. Here is what we've learned through experience about why arts integration is so important: 1. Working in the arts helps learners to develop creative problem-solving skills. 2. Teaching through the arts can present difficult concepts visually, making them more easy to understand. 3. Art instruction helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness. 4. Visual arts...
copyright 2017 by Steve Sibra (previously published in The Borfski Review) On my way to make a courier pick-up at the airport I saw a three-legged dog on the side of the road. He had a sign in his mouth. I put on the brakes so I could get a better look. “NEED RIDE TO THE AIRPORT”. Five words, written in large block style letters. Now I had seen some strange things. But a three-legged hitchhiking dog with a handmade sign? I pulled over. In the rear-view mirror, I saw the dog start my way. I noticed a man was stepping up alongside the dog – h...
THE CROWN OF CREATION We bounce in the backs of pickup trucks dirt road varnished by heat from the tires skeletons snore in the earth as we trundle by we relax, let our hair fly, shirt tails flap someone gets a nosebleed we put our hearts back into the soil prairie dogs and rattlers bask in the red glory of another day’s passing; we have not been this alive for a while. On the banks of the muddy Missouri our caravan coasts into silence; a prayer is delivered on the wind, it tells us “Life is different here; we let mouth and nose decide wha...

"Big Sandy as a place of residence becomes better every day. People are pouring into the country... coming right down to the brass tacks, the Big Sandy area offers more opportunities to the man who wants to get ahead... than any other place... The finest agricultural land... Water that's the best and entirely free from soda or alkali; the best shipping facilities... Come to Big Sandy..." This ringing endorsement was printed in the Mountaineer in 1915. After 135 years, our town continues to get...
“Twas the day before break, when all through the halls, All the students were anxiously climbing the walls; The lockers were open- kids combing their hair, In hopes that some snowflakes would soon fill the air; Kids were excited to sleep late in their beds, While visions of carefree days danced in their heads: With people in the office and I in my class, We just settled down and let our brains rest at last, When outside the room there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter….. By Elaina Weaver I sprang from my...

Luke Chapter 2 The Birth of Jesus 1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to his own town to register. 4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married...

My mother, Arlene Geyer Sibra, was old school all the way. When I was a kid, I heard all manner of old sayings come from her, everything from Bible quotes to the Farmer's Almanac. I thought some of it was just nuts, like something out of the science fiction comic books that I loved so much – for example; she had all sorts of theories about the moon and its position in the sky causing this or that. If the crescent moon was tipped up straight, it was like a ladle dumping out water, which meant it...

"I am thankful for my dog and for the pilgrims and for America too. Without my presents from Santa I don't know what I'd do. I'm glad to have TV in the winter, spring, and fall but it's food that I'm thankful for most of all." -Kanin Sura 1st Grade I am thankful for my family and for my friends too. Without my brother I don't know what I'd do. I'm glad to have a house in winter, spring, summer, and fall. But it's being blessed by God that I'm thankful for most of all. -Ella Chauvet 1st Grade I...

Around and about two years ago, I decided we must get two baby goats. I had seen cute videos, and our farrier's wife was selling them. Two good reasons, they are Pygmy Dwarf goats who came to us tiny and now have big bellies but are still short. For some unknown reason, the song 'Cisco Kid" by War began playing in my head. If you have never heard this song, you must check it out. In it, it says Cisco drank the whiskey, Pancho drank the wine. Well, one little guy certainly struck me as a Cisco....

I first saw Tana Rai Faltrino's art when her cousin Gay Pearson showed me a picture of her granddaughter with a horse that she had. I thought it captured the moment wonderfully. She lives in Havre. Tana grew up on a farm and ranch south of Havre. She was encouraged by her mother and the nuns at St. Judes School to continue to draw and paint. Tana studied painting and Art History at NMC. Another cousin Donna Jenkins, of Big Sandy and Tana, coauthored together a cookbook, Montana Legacy of Love...

I have never had a Guinea., never particularly aspired to have a Guinea, but a Guinea I have. Enter Henrietta into our lives! She has said her name is Henrietta, but since learning how flighty she is, I doubt we can trust her word. However, we will give her the benefit of the doubt. While feeding the horses one morning, we spotted Guinea strolling around with the horses, pecking up bits of feed. Where did she come from? We felt sure she'd skedaddle back to where she came, but this did not...

Sarah Suru says, "I do love art. I kind of grew up with it so.... My greatest influence was my mom. She was doing it since I was little." She went to Boise State to get a degree in Art metals. Diane Scalese encouraged her to concentrate on Metals. When she returned to Big Sandy, she worked under Jan?...
Researched by Zoe Merrill Editor’s note: Our lives make a difference. The Big Sandy Mountaineer should be about collecting stories from the people in the Big Sandy area. When I was told about Cornelia Knottnerus, after her death, I was reminded how important it is to get other’s stories. This woman lived in Big Sandy for many years and I would have loved to listen to her talk about her life. I would like to talk to you about yours. I listened to the Corrie’s whole oral history, over an hour long. I took notes but the following intro...

Like a lot of people, I have fond and nostalgic memories of my high school days. Well, at least I have memories. I can't even estimate how many people I know these days who say they can't remember anything that went on in high school. And some of them graduated this century! For whatever reason, I have pretty clear memories of those days. That is not to say they are accurate, or fair and balanced. But I do remember. I graduated from BSHS in 1974. I didn't work as hard as I should have in...

Editor's note. The early spring flower the crocus gets its name from the English. The French called it the pasque flower. While prairie children called it the gosling. The Indians had a "perfect" name for it, 'Ears of the Earth'. The following is a story from tradition. Wapee shivered and dew his robe tighter about him. It was cold there on the hillside, but the shiver was more of fear and loneliness than of cold. Always before he had slept in the tipi of his parents, where his father could...

Published in the Missoulian Nov 28, 2013 By its very definition, Thanksgiving means that we should look back on the past as we gather together with family and friends. The first recorded Thanksgiving in what became Montana took place in the isolated mining town of Bannack in 1863, shortly after President Abraham Lincoln had established it as a national observance. In the rough and tumble mining community, what people wanted to be thankful for was gold, and most were too busy looking for it to take time out to have much more than a helping of...
