This required change will help make the financial management of the district more efficient as we will only have to deal with one budget instead of two. Overall Big Sandy School’s general fund budget will go up sli...
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number one chronic disease among children is tooth decay, Montana state health officials said today. In fact, 2 out of 3 children (65 percent) in Montana have at least one cavity by third grade, compared to the national rate of 52 percent. “The good news is that tooth decay is preventable,” said Tonette Hollingsworth, Oral Health Program Coordinator for the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS). Hollingsworth said the key is early prevention, even before a bab...

Since last August Sharon Robertson has been the sky pilot for the Methodists in the Big Sandy area. Robertson is a very good fit for Methodists in this area since she has been attending the church since she was a freshman in high school. Not many ministers go that far back with the church they shepherd. "I think we are all coming around," said Robertson. "I never know what everyone else thinks but I think things are going well." Even though Sharon has lived in the Big Sandy area all of her...

In the Sheriff’s Report a couple of people have been picked up that were a part of the chainsaw incident last summer. One more is still at large. It is still not clear to the Mayor or Council just how that is going to be taken care of. The Mayor got an email from the c...

One year way back in the early 1950’s, it was a winter much like the one we have just finished experiencing in 2016. There was little snow in the Bear Paw Mountains and roads to Clear Creek were open all winter long. This was unheard of for Bee Lucke and C. L. Stuart who, had they had their way, would have spent every weekend all winter long at their current fishing shack. However, their wives put a stop to that. After all it was winter that Bee and C. L. got all their projects done around their Havre homes so they could spend the summer out o...
(StatePoint) Every lawn mower requires routine maintenance to keep it running with efficiency and maximum performance. If a breakdown occurs or parts wear out, it’s much more cost-efficient to simply replace the worn parts than it is to buy a whole new mower. To keep your mower functioning optimally, consider the following. Regular Maintenance Follow your manufacturer’s suggested maintenance schedule. Check your owner’s manual or your mower brand’s website for information on when and how to maintain your machine, including checking and changin...

"The Mountaineer" took telephone in hand last week and called some area cattle ranchers to find out how calving was going. Here are some of those interviews. Last week when Marla Ray was in she said that calving was going well. She handles the night shift as it is easy for her to go back to sleep and besides she knows about when her cattle (most of which are named) are ready to calve and it usually isn't at night. This week husband Jim Ray said that the calving is going good. They have 25 on the...
March is Charles M. Russell month here in Montana and by Charlie’s friends all over the world. Charles Russell was born in St. Louis, Missouri on March 19, 1864. This year we are celebrating his one hundred and fifty second birthday. For those of us born and raised in Montana, as often as not, he became a childhood hero and idol. It was even more obvious, the spot he held in the mystic of Montana when his statue was the first Montana choice for a statue on Statuary Hall in the Capitol Building in Washington. Early biographies of CMR were glowin...

Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day and since I don’t get to go to Butte for the parade, my main way of celebrating this wonderful time is to eat plenty of corn beef and cabbage. However, since the holiday comes on a Thursday this year, I do not have time to cook my corn beef and cabbage until Friday. I was trying to think what I love most about that meal? Is it the beef with a brown sugar and mustard sauce for dunk at the table or is it the new potatoes and carrots? Neither I must admit. I like the wonderful green cabbage cooked in that corn bee...
A few years ago, my younger brother shared a piece of wisdom with me that I have repeated dozens of times since. My brother is one of the youngest vice-presidents for the largest investment bank in the world. He is also married with 3 sons. He was telling me about other folks he watches at work, who had adopted expensive hobbies and were living way above their means. They are choosing lifestyles that required more and more success to sustain. He told me all of these things in the context of a conversation about his decision to limit his work...
This week Vicki picked “NYPD RED” 4 by James Patterson which is the story of an audacious heist, a shocking murder and a case that only “NYPD RED” can solve. It’s another glamorous night in the heart of Manhattan: at a glitzy movie premiere, a gorgeous starlet dressed to the nines and dripping in millions of dollars worth of jewelry on loan, makes her way past a horde of fans and Paparazzi. But then there is a sudden loud noise and an even louder scream and a vicious crime with millions of witnesses and no suspect---and now “NYPD RED” has a new...
Under the new federal Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) released in January 2016, the emphasis is on the overall importance of healthy eating patterns. They are not suggesting one eating pattern that everyone should follow but, instead, improving the quality of individuals’ current diets. Half of the US population is estimated to be suffering from preventable, diet-related chronic diseases. Lasting improvements to an individual’s health can happen by shifting to healthier eating patterns. Here are some key pieces of information under the...
Raising backyard poultry has become increasingly popular in Montana and many feed stores across the state offer chicks for sale. State health officials say that raising chicks can be a rewarding and fun experience, but they are reminding Montanans to keep safe handling practices in mind when handling live poultry in order to limit disease risk. “Even healthy animals can carry organisms that make people sick,” said Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) epidemiologist Dana Fejes. In 2015, 10 percent of Montanans who became ill...
Montana farmers and ranchers were afforded the opportunity to advocate for Montana farmers and ranchers at the 114th National Farmers Union convention in Minneapolis, MN. More than 500 members from over 20 states attended the convention. “What came out of this convention is a clearer understanding of how other states feel about important issues such as Waters of the US and GMO Labeling,” said President Alan Merrill. “MFU has very good policy on GMO, policy that has helped guide national’s development on the issue. This discussion, and dialogue...
