  • Good bye, Good Riddance, El Nino!

    Robert Lucke|Feb 24, 2016

Want the weather to change? Just ask the National Weather Bureau in Great Falls and see what they can do to bring better weather to this area. When “The Mountaineer” called them this week we had three questions. When is the February heat wave going to be over, when are we getting some moisture and when will we be shed of this dreaded El Nino effect? We were pleasantly surprised at what Keith at the National Weather Service had to say. For now until the end of February there are no significant storms in the offing. That sounds good for cal...

It is no secret that the Big Sandy City Council has been talking for a few months now about a new swimming pool for Big Sandy. "The Mountaineer" caught up with City Councilman Colby Baumgarn who is the head of the Parks and Recreation committee of the Big Sandy City Council. If there was going to be a new pool, Parks and Recreation would be tied closely to it. Mountaineer: Where did the idea of a new pool come from? Colby: the City Council brought up a new pool because of the condition of the...

  • Celebrate Red Cross Month by giving blood in March

    Feb 24, 2016

During Red Cross Month in March, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to join in its lifesaving mission by giving blood. Since 1943, every U.S. president has designated March as Red Cross Month to recognize how the Red Cross helps people down the street, across the country and around the world. Red Cross Month is a celebration of the everyday heroes, like Karla Essmiller, who are the face of the Red Cross in their communities. Essmiller began donating blood and even coordinated a few blood drives when she was in college....

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Feb 24, 2016

Should I feed this moldy hay? Moldy hay (or other moldy feedstuffs) won’t always contain dangerous or poisonous compounds; however, the presence of mold itself can negatively impact animal performance and health. Feedstuffs with considerable mold can produce close to a 5% decrease in energy content for ruminant animals. Moldy feed is understandably less palatable and could result in lower than target intakes of nutrients. The end result is decreased milk production, decreased growth, respiratory issues, and declining resistance to disease. M...

  • @ THE LIBRARY

    Robert Lucke|Feb 24, 2016

This week Vicki came up with a Molly Murphy mystery called “AWAY IN A MANGER” by Rhys Bowen. It is Christmastime in 1905 New York City and for once Molly Murphy Sullivan is looking forward to the approaching holidays. She has a family of her own now. She and Daniel have a baby son and twelve year old Birdie is living with them as their ward. As Molly and the children listen to carolers in the street, they hear a lovely voice, the voice of an angel, and see a begger girl huddled in a doorway singing “Away in a Manger”. Birdie is touched by the...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Feb 24, 2016

Easter is a few weeks away and churches all over the world are turning their attention to the final weeks leading up to Jesus’ arrest, trial, execution, and resurrection. John’s account of the events is unique because he gives more details regarding Jesus’ words during the last supper, including a prayer Jesus prayed before he was arrested. There is a line in this prayer that is important, but often overlooked. Praying for his followers he says: “I do not ask for these only, but also for tho...

  • Go organic and see increased rewards

    Feb 17, 2016

Organic agricultural production and food sales in America has been the fastest growing segment of agriculture since the approval of the USDA organic seal 20 years ago. Sales of organic food have consistently increased between 10 and 20% each year. The growth trend of organic food sales is expected to continue to reach new levels as main-line supermarkets all over the country are beginning to carry organic food. This is good news for farmers who grow organic food, and for any who may be thinking...

As many people living in this area know these wonderful banquets have been held yearly since 1984. Each year banquet proceeds go to the upkeep of park and recreational facilities in Big Sandy. For example, Sheehy Park on Sandy Creek would never have been the same after two floods had Rotar...

  • Presidents Day

    Robert Lucke|Feb 17, 2016

Presidents Day was February 15, 2016. I can remember when there was no Presidents Day so to speak and that February was a time to honor George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, both who had birthdays this month. Some have said that General Washington, as he was referred to, was the more important of the two and it is true that this Presidents day did hit right on his birthday. However, he was no more important than President Lincoln whose birthday was earlier in the month. Lincoln’s birthday was February 12. When I was a boy, if you were a t...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Feb 17, 2016

I am finding this February that the mid winter blues are much easier to chase away than many other years. Maybe it is that when writing these words it is going to be 60 above. Now normally I would be very worried about that and worse off due to mid winter blues. This year, I am not concerned. If my tulips come up and my peonies are showing color, that must be global warming and it is going to give me a great long growing season. And if it gets cold and soon, I have not planted anything and will not until Good Friday so I am in good shape both...

  • Birth of Upper Missouri Recreation

    Robert Lucke|Feb 17, 2016

I will never know for sure but I think I was present when recreation on the upper Missouri river got its start! It must have been in the middle to late 1950's and it was generally known that the area between the brand new or about to be built Fred L. Robinson bridge south of Landusky was to tie north and south Montana together in a way that had never been tied together before. All of a sudden there was a paved road going from Malta to Grass Range and on to Billings. That was big news for...

  • Ken Denning inducted into the MSU Wrestling Hall of Fame 3 years running

    Robert Lucke|Feb 10, 2016

When Ken Denning got a call a couple of weeks ago from MSU, it took him back many years to when he had graduated from Great Falls High School and started studying architecture at MSU in the fall of 1963. Ken could go to MSU because he got a Presidential Academic Scholarship which paid his tuition to any school in Montana. He had to be in the top two percent of his class and maintain a 3.2 GPA in college. Ken wrestled in high school so it seemed natural that MSU would want him to wrestle on the college team. “There were lots of Great Falls k...
