Montguide Available for Bull Buyers Kari Lewis and Wendy Becker, MSU Extension Agents from Glacier County and Fort Peck Reservation have developed a resource for the bull buying season. The MontGuide is available at the Chouteau County Extension office or online at https://bit.ly/43kVAsL. Bull selection is one of the most important management decisions a producer can make. Bulls are assessed phenotypically (appearance), genotypically (their genetic potential), and on performance (feed efficiency, carcass ultrasound, etc.) Bulls have a...

This is a wonderful fund raiser for us. You could stop by to purchase a raffle ticket or bid on a gift basket if...
Big Sandy Methodist would like to invite everyone to come to a movie club at the church. We have a large screen TV, on which we wish to show movies we believe people can enjoy together and then discuss afterwards. In fact, kind of a book club with no books! The first series to be offered is " The Chosen". This is a captivating drama about the life of Jesus Christ. Some have commented it can be watched at home. However, we feel your viewing and participation of such a film is made more valuable when viewing with others. This gives you a chance...

Gardening season is upon us. For some it is a way to cut down on the grocery bill, for other it is a way to test their survival skills, others it is just who they are (those people can be spotted by looking at their nails for a dirt manicure for half the year). I do not think that I am qualified for even a novice gardener class at this stage in my life, but here is what I have learned so far from my feeble attempts at a vegetable garden the last 6 years. Good gardens begin with good soil. We like to compost at our house. We keep a 5 gallon...

We know very little about the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations). What most people have heard about it is the NFHS Network, where they live stream events at high schools (and at the junior high level, too). The NFHS owns the NFHS Network, but first, we are going to do a little background history on who and what the NFHS is. I am hoping to turn this into a three-part series over the next few weeks. This part of the series will be about how it got started and the multiple different facets that come with NFHS. Several...
I know I should walk and am inspired by those who do. I just had a physical, and she assured me I was healthy enough to walk. I thought doing my research and revising the value of walking would help me become motivated. I hope it will help motivate you. Let’s face it: walking has numerous health benefits for people of every age. It can help with current health concerns and prevent others. It’s easy to do, and the weather is cooperating. 1. We all know walking burns calories, and many need to lose weight to get healthier. 2. Walking 30 minutes d...

Big Sandy wants to support our nearby small town and its efforts at bringing home a state championship! Congratulations to the Box Elder Bears and their boys' basketball team on going undefeated this season with a very impressive record of 26-0! After visiting with other people who know more about basketball than I do, I was even more impressed by the Bears. After leaving that discussion, I listened to them about what they noticed watching the Bears basketball team, specifically their coach,...

Two Big Sandy residents celebrated their 98th birthday recently. They both still live in their homes. Glen Cook and his wife Anita have moved to town to make life a little easier. Ruth Merrill still lives on the land she was born on and lived her entire life. I just wanted to visit with them both for a couple of minutes, especially after I compiled a list of what happened in their lifetime: World War II, Women had just gained the right to vote, the dropping of the first atomic bomb on...

TJ Bond wrote, "These drums are a foundational sound in many band setting and ours have been extremely past due to be replaced. With these new drums, our bank will perform with a much fuller sound which will help concerts here as well as it competition. It is a huge honor to receive money for these drums, they are very expensive!" Their...

With Good Friday and Easter fast approaching, the matter of how to approach these holidays arises for many people in this day and age. Last year, I wrote a series of articles looking at the various easter traditions that have arisen over the last 2,000 years. This year, I will be digging into the events of Good Friday and Easter in order to ask: Is this thing real? Did it really happen? Is it just an Iron Age superstition? The answers to these questions are of huge importance in terms of how we...
Helping You Prepare for the Gardening Season Believe it or not, the gardening season will be upon us before we know it. Below are a few gardening facts to help you prepare for the upcoming season. • Soil tests should be taken in the garden every three years. • The best time to collect a soil sample is in the spring after soil thaw. • Fall soil sampling is not recommended because nitrogen in the soil is depleted during the fall and winter seasons. • Do not work soil when it is wet. If the soil sticks to the shovel, wait a few more days. • The n...
It takes notable dedication for students to commit to a sport before school even starts. But that is what every volleyball player at Big Sandy High School did. We started practicing on the 11th of August. School started on the 21st, so we had already had 8 days of practice. Since Big Sandy High School is a class C school, we don’t cut anyone who tries out for the team. On the first and second days of practice, my coach, Brittany McKenney Richard, holds tryouts for the varsity team. So we have to run a mile and do drills to show our setting, p...
The Big Sandy Rotary Club hopes you would be interested in contributing to their 39th Annual Benefit Banquet. It started 40 years ago, but there wasn’t one during COVID. They scheduled it for March 16, 2024, and it has been held since 1984. Banquet proceeds support a long list of recipients: Volunteer Fire Department & EMTs, Food Bank, Senior Center, Rotary Youth Leadership Center (RYLA), the Library, The Swim Pool Project, Big Sandy Activities, Medical Center, Historical Society, Big Sandy Cemetery, the annual East Egg Hunt; upkeep of the l...

The Big Sandy Girl’s Basketball team is heading to the state basketball tournament for the first time in 15 years. The girls team has spent the last week and a half resting, getting healthy, and preparing for their trip to Great Falls to face off against the top ranked teams in Montana. I spoke with Coach Travis Baumann about the team, their season, and the team’s morale going into the state tournament. Travis described the girls as confident going into some stiff competition later this week. “R...
Early I interviewed, Cheyenne Feltz, DNP PMHNP-BC, the most recent provider at the Big Sandy Medical Center. Feltz is the new mental health provider, who is a Board Certified (BC) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) with a Doctor of Nursing (DNP). After the interview she gave me a sheet that I found extremely interesting. I knew nothing about Neurotransmitter. After reading this sheet it frustrates me to hear people say we should all just “buck up” or pull ourselves up by our boot straps. So many of the issues of my fri...

In August 1973, I left St. Louis, Missouri and traveled by train to Hays, Montana to accept a position as Principal of St. Paul’s Mission School in Hays on Ft Belknap Reservation. During the next few years, 5 more Sisters joined me to teach and minister on Ft. Belknap. From there, after nine years, I moved to Great Falls at the request of Bishop Murphy to work for the Catholic Diocese. I lived there for 14 years and participated in various ministries. My favorite ministry was volunteering and teaching GED and Art Programs in Cascade County J...
The Pioneer Parent Team is holding a Flamingo Frenzy Fundraiser to help support our schools. How can you participate? Send your fun-loving friend, family, neighbors, or enemy? a yard full of flamingos. Unsuspecting loved ones will walk out their front door and see pink flocking flamingos all over their yard. Flocks will rest for at least 24 hours at each location before migrating to their new location. The Pioneer Parent Team has three different flock sizes and prices for the flamingo yard flocking (see insert in this week’s paper). You can a...

It isn't about the sport. It's about supporting the kids, friends, and community. There was a fundraiser/dinner- a Divisional Tournament Pep Rally with a Spaghetti Dinner, a 3-Point shoot, a pop shot, and Little Pioneer Basketball games on Tuesday, the 20th. On February 29th, there will be a Dodgeball Tournament at 7:30 pm following the junior high Wrestling. If you had attended the Pep Rally, it would have been obvious to see our support for each other. Ella Jurenka told me they fed 150 people...

8 years ago this week, Big Sandy residents witnessed a shoot out when two well respected locals got into an argument. One appeared to have gone for his gun, prompting the other to draw and fire. The paper described the injury as “mortal.” The article was written the day of the shooting and the paper went to press shortly thereafter, which resulted in a fairly vague retelling. The crazy thing about the story is that there was no proper follow up. Very little explanation about the shooting app...
Winter Fertilization Facts Fall and winter broadcast application of urea (46-0-0) continues to take place on various winter wheat farms across Chouteau County. The major concern of broadcasting urea is nitrogen loss through ammonia volatilization. Volatilization results when there is a conversion from dissolved ammonia to ammonia gas. From 2008-2012, Rick Engel and Clain Jones (MSU Soil Scientists) have studied NH3 losses from surface-applied urea. Below are a few conclusions of their research. • Engle’s research (4 years and 20 studies) doc...
