National Hospital week was May 11-17 this year. In true Big Sandy Medical Center fashion, the week was celebrated with dress up days, special meals, activities, laughs, and memories. This year was extra special, as this is the facilities 60th year in business. To kick off the week, Monday was "camping day." Patients and staff alike wore their favorite camping gear, participated in a plunger toss (kin to an axe toss without the sharp edges) and made S'mores on the patio in the afternoon. Tuesday...

My sister, Dena, did many, many hours of research for the Mountaineer. In my mind, she's phenomenal. She told me, "I enjoyed researching Chouteau County Sheriffs so much because I've always loved history. I don't mean the history people get in high school or grade school that turned them off from history. I mean the kind of stuff that explains why that street is named what it is and why that road has a certain name? Who are the people behind that name who lived there?" "When you like history,...

BOZEMAN – Several species of ticks are native to Montana, and they are a common sight for runners, hikers and campers in the spring and summer months. But for the first time, specialists in Montana have identified a blacklegged tick in the state, a species that can carry and transmit Lyme disease. Rocky Mountain wood ticks and American dog ticks are commonly seen in Montana, said Marni Rolston, a diagnostician in MSU Extension's Schutter Diagnostic Lab in the Department of Plant Sciences and Pla...

Graduation and another new start have come and gone. The day was full of memories and excitement for the future! Loved ones from all over the nation and home, small-town best friends, came together to celebrate the Class of 2025. The class asked Shon Tester to speak to them. He said, "Through my experiences, every graduation speech, college or high school, is essentially the same. They're just worded differently with someone's personal twist. So what can I say to you, in the seven minutes allott...

With the final weeks of the 2024-2025 school year upon us, the annual FE Miley Extravaganza created the opportunity for elementary students to show off their projects, hard work, and share some of what they learned with parents and neighbors. The Elementary Extravaganza took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, the 14th. Each class showed off projects associated with a major area of focus for the school year. Superintendent Dan Schrock summed up the annual event quite well: "For me, personally,...

Big Sandy Art was on full display at the Big Sandy Museum. I loved the opportunity to bid and win a gardening basket and still supported the art show. Dan Schrock, Superintendent of Big Sandy Schools, said, " I think if you look at all the efforts of the kids that have participated and entered their work in this show, it just speaks to the trajectory of our art program, and that's a really positive thing. We are incredibly fortunate to have Miss Jay. She is a rock star and has elevated this...
Managing Nuisance Ants in and Around the Home Foraging worker ants sometimes enter homes in search of food, and if they find an indoor food source, the workers will leave chemical trails for other workers to follow. Food found either indoors or outdoors is carried to the nest to feed the colony. This behavior makes the use of ant baits an effective control measure. To keep ants from entering the home, make sure the kitchen is clean and no attractive food, like a honey container, is left out for the ants to find. Use a mild vinegar solution to...

I want to encourage any family to join the swim team. For the older kids, it's a wonderful way to get in excellent shape for fall sports. For younger swimmers, it's one of the best ways to develop confidence! The friends they make all over the state encourage them to be confident socially. So, it's something to do all summer long: getting stronger, building self-esteem, and building confidence. You aren't required to go to every meet, but you'll want to. You will only be required to attend two....

How Farmers, Gardeners and Insecticide Applicators Can Reduce Risks of Honeybee Injury When Spraying Insecticides. Honeybee injury results when pesticides are applied or allowed to drift to hives, blooming crops, wild plants or weeds. The following article comes from the University of Nebraska and is available at: https://bit.ly/3vQPhuz. Do not treat fields in bloom. Be especially careful when treating crops, such as alfalfa, sunflowers and canola, which are highly attractive to bees. Insecticide labels carry warning statements about...

10 years is quite a legacy to be proud of. Anyone who had the pleasure of being cared for by or working beside Pam Gasvoda, would agree. Pam has decided to retire from the Big Sandy Medical Center, taking with her her heart for these folks, her endless compassion, and her bright smile. However, she leaves a legacy that is unique to the Big Sandy Medical Center. 37 years of her life was spent among the walls of the facility. Her career started in 1970 when she graduated with her Bachelor of...

A new exciting fund raiser by the Big Sandy Rotary is nearing it's deput. I had a nice conversation with Shon Tester, who is spearheading this exciting new Willys truck! Someone here will win it! Shon told me, "Steve Klanick purchased the1959 Willys Brand New. In 2001, Blaine Opus bought it; after that, Deb and Dave Louvar owned it and generously gave it to Rotary." Shon has restored other cars, and Deb had originally called to see if he wanted it for his own collection of antique cars. "She...

Are Your Pine Needles Brown, Red or Purple? It Could be Winterburn. Information from this article comes from MSU Extension Forester Dr. Peter Kolb. During dry and cold winters, evergreen trees growing in windbreaks or other exposed areas can be afflicted with needle discoloration that ranges from brown to purple followed by needle drop. Often this is most prevalent on the south side or windward side of the tree. In some cases only last year’s new needles are impacted, and in other cases most of the older needles are disproportionately a...

Justin Smith is the current Sheriff of Chouteau County. He is at the end of a long line of history-making men. 32nd in that long line is a family man with three children and a military veteran. Justin comes from a long line of military men. His grandfather, his father, and he all served in the US Air Force. His father was stationed in Holland when Justin was born, so when asked about his birth, he replied, "I'm a US citizen born abroad, and I have a funny-looking certificate," which gives the...

April was declared Autism Month and Big Sandy Miley School. Big Sandy does have a number of students diagnosed with Autism. One in 36 children in the United States will be diagnosed with Autism. Amidst the significant controversy surrounding autism, it's crucial to remember the essence of this discussion. The focus should always be on the students who have autism, and the necessity to respect and include them in our everyday lives. Inclusion is not just a concept, it's a fundamental need. There...

Do you have a little red heart on your license? You could be a lifesaver. Your decision to donate organs, corneas, or healing tissues like skin, bones, or veins, can save up to eight people, restore sight, and improve the quality of life for dozens more. But if not - April is Donate Life Month, which aims to bring awareness to the life-saving impact of organ donation and the 100,000+ patients across the country waiting for an organ transplant. Their lives are dependent on the generosity of...
Our little town on the Montana Prairie has a history that stretches nearly 150 years. This week, I spent a little time looking at our community and some of the landmark and unusual events that have taken place here. On April 6, 1890 Big Sandy received their first postmaster. T.A. Marlow received an annual salary of $150 to run the local post office. Receiving a postmaster was no small deal for towns at the time. For starters, it meant that the community now had a local communications hub. At the time, it was not unusual for rural residents to...
