Hailed Out and Emerged Volunteer Wheat Should be Sprayed Immediately after Harvest Information for this article was compiled from a Kansas State University Press Release in 2016. Producers often wait several weeks after harvest before making their first herbicide application to control volunteer wheat,” said Dallas Peterson, K-State Research and Extension Weed Management Specialist. “This allows as much volunteer as possible to emerge before spraying it or tilling it the first time. As I have gotten older, my energy levels have depleted. I’m sure it’s due to getting older, but also my own poor choices in terms of what I eat and what I don’t do in terms of exercise. I’ve drank energy drinks, just hoping to find one that isn’t bad for me. Energy drinks have been around for centuries and have continued to gain popularity over the years. What started as a medicinal tonic approach to an energy boost for the working class has evolved into a morning, afternoon, and evening ritual every bit as crowd-pleasing and relied upon as y...

Doug Giebel, a dedicated collector, has spent a decade amassing a diverse array of historically significant items. His Big Sandy Cultural Museum, housed in the town's iconic big store, is a testament to his eclectic tastes. As he shared his knowledge and showed me clear photographs, Doug pointed out, "This is our most historic and important building. It was built by McNamara and Marlowe, the two ranchers who started the town. When the railroad came through, they shipped their sheep and cattle....

In the summer of 2022, 16 youth group students from St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church traveled to Mexico City on a pilgrimage to see the holy image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Just a few months later at the beginning of the school year, the youth group had a massive increase going from a student roster of 8 kids to an attendance of 19-22 students, despite losing 3 graduating seniors. The initial pilgrimage had been very successful in reinforcing themes learned in class. Thus, began...
Homecoming 2025 is days away, and with it, the local premier of the Big Sandy, a one stage play about the Big Sandy Cornfield Bomber incident from February 2nd, 1970. The Mountaineer has run several articles on the event over the last year, because it is a unique event. This is the only recorded instance of an airplane landing itself after its pilot ejected. Gary Foust, the young pilot of the plane, graciously sat down for an interview. Last week, we shared some highlights related to the event. This week, we hope to share some details from the...

Another great school year came to a close, and the perfect way to kick off the summer was symbolized by the 2nd Annual End of the School Year Barbecue. The event was hosted by Big Sandy Schools and Pioneer Producers. If you are unaware of who Pioneer Producers are, here is a little glimpse. Pioneer Producers is a non-profit organization based out of Big Sandy with a board of local ranchers, farmers, and all around agriculture activists. Our mission is to nourish and strengthen our community by providing locally raised beef to our youth and...
The homecoming committee is doing a great job, and Rotary wanted to help in any way they could to make it a success. Interviewing Shon Tester, he said, The Homecoming Committee and Rotary are getting along fantastically. They have always done so, and Rotary has assisted the Homecoming Committee with the flowers on Main Street, which look amazing. During Homecoming, “We are also featuring our restoration of the 59 Willys truck. On Main Street, we will have a 16-foot by 32-foot tent that will house everything Rotary right in front of Courtney a...

FE Miley's beloved 3rd Grade teacher, Mrs. Sheri Moore, has retired as of the end of the 2024-2025 school year. Sheri has been teaching in Big Sandy for the last 12 years and will be missed. Over the summer, she will be moving to Lewistown, where her husband has been working as superintendent for the last year. Sheri and Brad Moore have closed on a house in Lewistown and are working on selling their home in Big Sandy. When we spoke on the last day of school, Sheri was planning a trip to move...
Big Sandy Theater’s production of The Big Sandy by Mike Hesford will be performed during homecoming weekend, Friday June 20th at 6 PM and Saturday June 21st at 3 PM. The show is a fictional depiction of the on-the-ground events/reactions to the Big Sandy Cornfield Bomber’s arrival in a hay field just south of Box Elder and adjacent to Highway 87. The play describes itself as a story that is “only like 10% true” and provides an opportunity to laugh a little at the famous event from February 2, 1970. I visited with Gary Foust, the pilot who eject...
Mulching is a Must for Lawn and Garden Landscapes During the Hot Summer This article was written by Ron C. Smith NDSU Extension Horticulturalist (Retired). The single most serious problem with ornamental plants in Northern Plains region is not a disease, insect or mite problem; it is environmental stress. Stress affects plant material in direct and indirect ways. It can cause damage directly and weaken the plants to the point where they are vulnerable to insect and disease attack. Stress is a problem in the Plains region because we, in our land...

Memorial Day always makes me cry! I even saw a veteran break down and cry and another veteran comforting him. I have noticed that each year more people come home to honor those who passed away, serving our country, in our community. A breakfast is served by the Big Sandy Historical Society at the Big Sandy Museum followed by a parade. This year's parade was the best yet, with numerous old vehicle. After the parade a program was held at the Big Sandy Highschool. Diana LaBuda, Bob Quinn, and...
Upside of a Short Calving Season There are several benefits to a short calving season including simplifying cow management, gaining efficiency of labor management, increasing weaning weight and improving uniformity/marketability of the calf crop. Collectively all these advantages lead to one positive potential impact: improved profitability. CattleFax survey data of cow-calf operations sorts participants into three groups: high, average and low profitability. The high profitability group had a shorter calving season with a higher percentage of...

The Big Sandy Swimming Pool is issuing an S.O.S. for the coming summer: Save Our Swim. They are currently facing a critical shortage of applicants to fill the needed lifeguards to run the pool for the season. If they are unable to find the necessary staff, the pool will either remain closed or will be forced to remain open only during a limited number of days and times. This is a particularly concerning development as the community has reached the $1.9 million mark in the quest to build a new...
Last Friday, the Town of Big Sandy received news from the Montana Fish and Game Department, Land and Water Conservation Fund that Big Sandy had been awarded an additional $500,000 from the National Park Service. Over a year ago, Big Sandy had been awarded $615,000 from the same source. However, at the time, the costs of a new pool began to skyrocket along with construction costs throughout the nation. Consequently, the LWCF contacted Big Sandy about the possibility of receiving additional or supplemental funding. That additional funding has now...

National Hospital week was May 11-17 this year. In true Big Sandy Medical Center fashion, the week was celebrated with dress up days, special meals, activities, laughs, and memories. This year was extra special, as this is the facilities 60th year in business. To kick off the week, Monday was "camping day." Patients and staff alike wore their favorite camping gear, participated in a plunger toss (kin to an axe toss without the sharp edges) and made S'mores on the patio in the afternoon. Tuesday...

My sister, Dena, did many, many hours of research for the Mountaineer. In my mind, she's phenomenal. She told me, "I enjoyed researching Chouteau County Sheriffs so much because I've always loved history. I don't mean the history people get in high school or grade school that turned them off from history. I mean the kind of stuff that explains why that street is named what it is and why that road has a certain name? Who are the people behind that name who lived there?" "When you like history,...

BOZEMAN – Several species of ticks are native to Montana, and they are a common sight for runners, hikers and campers in the spring and summer months. But for the first time, specialists in Montana have identified a blacklegged tick in the state, a species that can carry and transmit Lyme disease. Rocky Mountain wood ticks and American dog ticks are commonly seen in Montana, said Marni Rolston, a diagnostician in MSU Extension's Schutter Diagnostic Lab in the Department of Plant Sciences and Pla...
