KNMC is seeking musicians of all skill levels to participate in our annual rock lotto. The Big Sandy Medical Center has hired an interim CEO, following the resignation of the current CEO last week. Ron Wiens, an administrator from Shodair Children's Hospital in Helena, was hired for the interim position while the BSMC Board of Directors advertise and begin a search for a permanent CEO. The Big Sandy Senior Center Board has hired a cook, Robin Coyler, for the center with an opening date of August 1st, hopefully. Robin formally worked for the Big Sandy nursing home and needed to give them time to hire a new cook. At the last meeting, the members discussed meal tickets. They have been found. Friday, July 8, major thuderstorm hit Big Sandy, sustained winds of 77 MPH winds with gusts up to 91 MPH, rain and hail. Trees were blowed down and there was some damage to houses and yards. See Page A6 for some more pictures....
The town of Big Sandy held a regular meeting on June 22nd. Every council member was present, along with two members of the public. The SWPP (stormwater pollution permit) has finally come through. ACME is updating the construction schedule. The council asked them to go to town and update the businesses on Johannes Avenue. A start date is tentatively set for July 5th. Dan Schrock, Big Sandy Schools' new superintendent, arrived in town over the 4th of July weekend. Dan has been working in Montana for a few years, but is originally from Michigan. "I grew up in lower Michigan, but I graduated from college at Northern Michigan University Marquette up there in the U.P. (upper peninsula). Then I came out to Montana after that." The home of the Pioneers football team is sporting a new look, thanks to the efforts of several volunteers in our community. The field and track were previously lined with railroad ties, installed by the football teams of the mid-1980's. Years of weathering took its toll and many of them were rotten and deteriorating. Natalen Gasvoda has opened Blushing Willow Salon, a new beauty shop in Big Sandy. She chose the name because she likes "Willow," which means new beginnings. She completed her schooling in 2016 and worked at the Top Hat in Havre for six years. Natalen is married to Adrian Gasvoda, and they are expecting their first child in August. Jim Taylor Motors in Fort Benton recently announced plans to donate $100 for every vehicle sold from May through the end of 2022 to restoring Fort Benton’s Historic Walking Bridge. The money will be donated to the City of Fort Benton in honor of Mike Taylor, who founded Jim Taylor Motors with his brother. Most of the time at the last Senior Center meeting was spent looking at and discussing the new by-laws. The by-laws were tabled until the next meeting because Barb Ophus will bring an amendment forward. Barb would like to see the board include younger members of our community. The Big Sandy Medical Services Foundation voted this week to donate $15,000 to the Medical Center’s kitchen renovation project. I got excited when I saw the pictures of Big Sandy's first pool. I had heard a swimming pool before our current pool was somewhere by the Big Sandy Lumber. I have been searching for information through old newspapers. I haven't yet found much about how it was built and by whom. The first mention of a pool was in October of 1917.
