    Janell Barber|Jun 17, 2020

Reports of fraud and scams have, unfortunately, become a normal part of our lives. It can happen to anyone. As the fastest growing segment of the population in the United States, older adults are especially targeted and uniquely vulnerable to financial scams. Con artists find them as attractive prey because, older adults are thought to have a “nest egg,” have excellent credit, won’t say “no” because they were raised to be polite and trusting, are less likely to report the fraud for fear of appearing to have a weakened mental capacity because t...

  • Grizzly Bear spotted outside Big Sandy last week

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 10, 2020

Nathan Keane usually gets up, lets the dog out, and then makes coffee for himself. For some reason, on Wednesday, June 3rd, he went directly to the kitchen to make himself some coffee. Nathan looked outside his kitchen window to see 30 feet from the house and in the chicken coop a grizzly bear. He had to do a double-take. "I couldn't believe it. I would have never dreamed there would be a grizzle bear in my front yard." The grizzly was inside the chicken pen. They couldn't see what he was...

  • Barracudas to hold meet this Saturday

    Melanie Schwarzbach|Jun 10, 2020

The Big Sandy Barracudas, under the direction of coaches Travis Baumann and Connie Reichelt, are back in the pool for their 9th season as a team. 36 swimmers are on the team this year and while they have taken to the pool to begin their summer training, they have been left with a very uncertain season. COVID-19 restrictions still in place have left teams in other towns unwilling or unable to host their regularly scheduled swim meets. These other teams are working with their local health departments and city councils to try to host meets, but...

  • Summer Reading at the Jeff Reichelt Library

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 10, 2020

It was fun to discover Mother Goose walking the streets of Big Sandy. Even more fun to see that she had ways to encourage the kids to read. According to Mother Goose, "This year's Summer Reading theme is Imagine Your Story, and challenge you to use your imagination. You can go on adventures with Jack and the Beanstalk or ride a wild unicorn. The adventure is yours to have." "Although this year's Summer Reading Program will look different than usual we have used our imaginations to come up with w...

MSU Agronomists (Richard Engel, Clain Jones, and Simon Fordyce) have put together a document on Soil Acidification Management. The document is available online at the following URL: http://landresources.montana.edu/fertilizerfacts/html/FF79.html. Paper copies are available at the Chouteau County Extension office. The study concluded that adding 90 pounds of seed-placed fertilizer-phosphorus (0-45-0) can mitigate aluminum toxicity and increase growth and grain yield of cereal crops in acid-affected soils. In addition, responses to...

  • Big Sandy Booster Club Meeting

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 10, 2020

The Booster Club met for the first time in four months. The essential discussion was probably the call to parents who care about their children's activities to get involved in supporting those activities. This Booster Club is like no other Booster Club. Usually, Booster Clubs are included only in high school sports activities. The Big Sandy Booster Club supports both grade school and high school activities, including all extracurricular activities, not just sports. An interesting fact is that...

  • Getting By

    Janell Barber|Jun 10, 2020

The past few weeks I have covered canning and freezing foods. An additional method of preserving food is dehydration. Dehydration of food is one of the oldest and simplest methods of food preservation. During the dehydration process, moisture is removed from the food. Removing the moisture prevents bacteria, yeast and molds from growing preventing the food from spoiling. Maintaining cleanliness throughout the process and using food-grade containers and equipment also ensures a safe food product. There are a few ways you can dry foods. You...

  • Positive Pioneer Praises

    Heather Wolery|Jun 10, 2020

On Sunday, March 15th Governor Bullock announced he was closing schools across Montana due to rising concerns about the Coronavirus. We had already planned to take the next day off as a snow day and we used it to make plans for how we would proceed with distance learning. On Monday teachers made plans and bagged up things the students would need. On Tuesday we passed out materials in a drive up situation at the Elementary and High School. And on Wednesday, just three days later, our students were receiving online instruction! What an...

Once again Keely Bahmiller heading up the effort for the 3rd Annual Big Sandy Community Yard Sale June 20th between 8-3:00. She is still trying to get more people to commit to have a sale. COVID-19 rules are required, but she has gotten permission from the County Health Nurse and the City council to once again organize a community Yard sale. In years past, the Community Yard Sale has had between 25-30 different Yard Sales. This year so far only 12 individuals have committed. People have travelled as far as Billings to attend and we need more...

  • Big Sandy/Fort Benton Pharmacy Profile

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 3, 2020

Editor's note: During the Summer months of 2020, the Mountaineer will support the businesses that support the paper by writing a weekly Business Profile. We acknowledge the interdependence we have with small businesses. During COVID-19, it has become obvious how important our communities are, and with that, make this effort to support each other. Chris Halko is the owner and pharmacist of both Fort Benton and Big Sandy Pharmacy, and he wanted to make sure that I emphasized the employees of the...

  • Green Arces

    Tyler Lane|Jun 3, 2020

Laurie Kerzicnik (MSU Entomologist) wrote the article below to help Montanans prepare for the upcoming wasp and hornet season. Except for the Western yellowjacket, social wasps are typically not aggressive unless their nest is disturbed. Most are beneficial and feed on a lot of garden pests. The most common wasps are bald-faced hornets, aerial yellowjackets, Western yellowjackets, and paper wasps. They live in colonies, which include workers, queens, and drones. They all feed on insects. The western yellowjacket is a scavenger, feeding on...

  • 5 Tips To Keep Mosquitoes Away

    Jun 3, 2020

Summer is on its way, which means so are mosquitoes. The flying pests invade neighborhoods like an army, but they aren’t just a backyard nuisance with bites that itch. They also can carry dangerous diseases, including West Nile virus and Zika. Most regions of the U.S. have issues with mosquitoes, but knowing prevention and mitigation measures can stop them from mushrooming into a big problem, says Dr. Craig Stoops (www.mosquito-authority.com), a retired U.S. Navy medical entomologist and chief science officer at Mosquito® Authority, a mo...

  • Getting By

    Janell Barber|Jun 3, 2020

Maybe canning is not for you, but do you have extra produce you want to preserve and have available for later? Freezing is a convenient option for preserving food while maintaining a large portion of its nutritional value and flavor. Freezing will cause texture changes due to the water inside vegetables. You will find some produce freeze better than others. Depending on personal preference and what you are using the frozen food for, you may find you prefer some over others. Select produce at peak flavor, maturity and texture. If possible,...

  • Remember Memorial Day

    Zoe Merrill|May 20, 2020

Although the importance of Memorial Day should be honored and remembered, Lindsay Boyce wrote to me, saying, “We would like to notify people that the whole parade and program at the high school are canceled. The American Legion Post will still be doing a 21-gun salute and playing taps at the cemetery to honor those who have passed. However, due to phase 1 still being in affect, we can’t have an audience and therefore, will not be reading the names.” The American Legion Auxiliary will not be distributing the poppies either this year. The event...

  • American Auxiliary Poppy Poster Contest winner Brooke Schwenke

    Zoe Merrill|May 20, 2020

I interviewed Brooke Schwenke on the internet, and she wrote her answers to my questions. I asked her about her drawing that she had received an award for. Brooke wrote, "I entered the American Auxiliary Poppy Poster contest my junior year, because my art teacher, Ms. Jaramillo, presented us with the amazing opportunity to get our work into the contest. She always offered us the best ways to get our artwork out there and was 100% supportive through it all and always making sure we didn't have...

  • Congratulations Class of 2020!

    Zoe Merrill|May 20, 2020

Not your traditional graduation, but it made me cry just the same. It was a beautiful hot day, the weather held, and the sun shined right into parents’ faces. It started with the graduates walking from downtown to the football field. The streets were lined with residence cheering and throwing confetti. Girls on one side and boys on the other side as they walked, not in a single line but almost. Like they were tackling their future together. The names of each senior were read along with s...

    Tyler Lane|May 20, 2020

The Master Gardener program provides research based information for gardeners. Below are a few notes taken from the turf management portion of the program. • Rough bluegrass is probably the best grass in Montana for shady areas. • Kentucky bluegrass is the best grass for open sunny areas with well-drained soil. • Annual ryegrass can be used as a cover crop following vegetable production. • The standard lawn mix is 60% Kentucky bluegrass, 30% creeping red fescue and 10% annual ryegrass. • Zoysiagrass does not grow well in Montana. Montana s...

  • Parade for the Big Sandy Nursing Home residence

    Zoe Merrill|May 20, 2020

I had to go. I knew it would be heart-warming to watch a parade that was formed just so people at the nursing home could get outside. It was a beautiful day; the sun was shining, and there wasn't any wind. They waited till the Sheriff's car came around the corner, followed by several people driving their cars by so they could wave and tell them hello! A motorcycle went by, an old blue pickup, a red corvette with my grandchildren in it, an old built car, I didn't know what make it was, there...
