    Janell Barber|Aug 8, 2018

People suffer heat-related illness when the body’s temperature control system is overloaded. The body normally cools itself by sweating. However, under some conditions, sweating just isn’t enough. In such cases, a person’s body temperature rises rapidly. Very high body temperatures may damage the brain or other vital organs. Most heat illnesses occur from staying out in the heat too long. Exercising too much for your age and physical condition are also factors. Anyone can succumb to the heat if one does not take appropriate precautions when exp...

  • Big Sandy O-Mok-See is Saturday August 4th

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 1, 2018

No one really knows how long the O-Mok-See has existed. It is believed to originate with the Blackfoot Tribe and means "riding the big dance." Although it may have originated there, what it is now more resembles the Spanish-American word for "rodeo". In the state of Montana, it was formally organized in 1947. It is a sport of pattern horse racing. Every O-Mok-See event alternates the races from the event before using a wide variety of skills. There are over 79 skilled races. The next O-Mok-See...

Alfalfa Longevity is Increased by Harvest Management It is recommended to allow a minimum of 30 days between the last harvest and the first killing frost in the fall to allow alfalfa plants time for sufficient carbohydrate accumulation. It is important to know the average date of the first killing frost in your area when determining the last harvest date. It is equally important that a stand is healthy, with adequate soil nutrient reserves, entering winter. The healthier the stand, the lower the chance of winter injury and/or winterkill...

  • Barracudas to Swim in Class A at the State Meet

    Melanie Schwarzbach|Aug 1, 2018

Big Sandy has the smallest school enrollment of the twenty-two towns that complete in the summer swimming federation. However, division determination for swimming is different than for school sports. Unlike MHSA, which places teams in divisions based upon school enrollment, swimming classes are determined based upon team points scored at the divisional meet. Big Sandy’s finish at the divisional meet places the team in the A division for state. The top five point scoring teams at the two divisional meets are placed in the Class AA division (...

  • Still going strong: The Butler Farm 105 Years Later

    Zoe Merrill|Jul 25, 2018

Vance and Jean Butler still farm at the home place. They still live in the house built by Wesley for his wife Mary in 1913. It's been remodeled of course, but it was and still is an amazing home. So much family connected to the house. Farming stills runs in his blood too. He still loves it. "It's a good way of life. It's a struggle at times with commodity prices being where there at, but it's better than a 9-5, I think. I'd rather work 5-9. I work till it's dark." When you ask why he still likes...

Horticultural Tips for August I hope our Chouteau County gardeners have had a productive year growing vegetables, flowers, trees and shrubs. Below are a few tips for the month of August. • Renovate strawberries by mowing a minimum of every three years. Some people mow their strawberries every year following fruit production. Be sure to set the mower high enough to mow the leaves. Mowing to low may damage the crowns and kill the plant. • Topdress strawberries after harvest with a complete fertilizer like 16-16-16. • Pinch the tops of indet...

  • Father Pete will be missed at the pulpit by many

    Zoe Merrill|Jul 18, 2018

On July 1, 2018 Father Pete retired after 41 years of service to the Big Sandy, Box Elder, and Rocky Boy Catholic Churches. Attending a potluck supper in honor of Father Pete, found those in attendance emotional about his leaving. Some just teared up when asked what he meant to them and couldn't give a verbal response. I was given a quote by one of the women who said it was one of her favorite quotes. It was by Sister Theresa and it says, "we can't all do great things, but we can all do small...

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, the Friends of the Missouri Breaks Monument (FMB) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sponsored the 1st Missouri Breaks Triathlon. The event used the Missouri River as the backdrop. It was designed to be a family or group event just to celebrate.
