Although September is almost behind us, I could not miss my opportunity to put in my annual plug for this month being National Sewing Month. This past year brought new sewing enthusiasts into the world of sewing as well as those who used to sew back. Motivations of why people sew vary from relieving stress to a way of saving money, although many would say it is an expensive hobby. If you have not caught the sewing bug yet but have been thinking about it, here is some information to get you started. If you are worried about the cost of sewing,...
Kandi Marino needs a kidney transplant. They need $10,000 down before they even put her on the list., and she’ll need more after the surgery. Kandi has lived in Big Sandy for 36 years, and she calls it her hometown. She’s seen how people treat each other. “We are family here. That’s how people act. I’ve seen it for 36 years. My kids told me it was time I allowed the family to help support me.” She knows this community is all about caring, but her son said she wouldn’t just have a benefit. She wanted to serve the community. “I get all embarrasse...

If you're looking for delicious barbecue in the area, you can't go wrong visiting The Public House in Fort Benton. The Public House offers a range of smoked meat options, prepared by their resident barbecue chef, Alex Salazar. Alex has been cooking at The Wake Cup (and more recently at its sister restaurant, The Public House), but he has been smoking food most of his life. I met Alex when he competed in the Big Sandy Church of God Brisket Cook-Off 2 years ago. Then, he was just beginning to...

After 9 years in the town of Big Sandy, my family and I took a major step toward becoming permanent Big Sandy residents by purchasing a house of our own. We feel particularly blessed to have bought the Brumwell's house as they retired and moved closer to their kids. Not only have we bought a neat home, but we are now living in a piece of Big Sandy history. The newly dubbed "Sietsema House" bears all sorts of signs that it is over a century old, from the ornate "old west hinges and moldings, to...
The following article and study were completed by Ben Hauptman, MSU Extension Granite County. In summer 2020 the active ingredient indaziflam (RejuvraTM) was approved by the Environmental Protection Agency for use on rangelands, CRP, and natural areas. Indaziflam’s mode of action inhibits cellulose biosynthesis in seedlings, making it an effective pre-emergent herbicide for annuals such as cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), a non-native winter annual grass. Cheatgrass is the most widespread invasive plant in the western U.S., and it is p...

A couple of months ago, I wrote an article about my upcoming participation in the Great Cycle Challenge. I am about a week away from finishing my fourth year of riding in the largest cycling event in the United States to raise money for fighting kids' cancer. I committed to raising $500 and riding 200 miles during the month of September. So far, I am about halfway through my miles and have nearly reached my goal for fundraising. Though I have almost cleared my goal, that doesn't need to be the...
The Big Sandy Medical Guild has postponed the Rummage Sale and Pie Social, due to rising concerns of increased COVID-19 cases, but the fundraising efforts will continue through the sale of raffle tickets. Proceeds will be earmarked for much-needed upgrades to the kitchen at the Big Sandy Medical Center (BSMC). Guild members decided to “err on the side of caution,” according to Lisa Sipler, “because the pandemic lockdown process was very difficult for our residents.” By postponing the popular community event, “we will reduce the risk of exposu...
All city council members were present at the last city council meeting except for Rich Jesperson, who had a tree limb removal accident. He was home from the hospital and healing from a concussion. All three of the city employees were present, including Tim Labuda, Larry Geyer, and Wendy Kleinsasser, the city clerk. Also present at the meeting, Sherriff’s Deputy, Dennis Hale, who had no official report but was asked about the high-speed car chase that went through Big Sandy around 2:30 AM. In lieu of the traditional Harvest Dinner, this year the ladies of the PCW at St. Margaret Mary's have decided to host a Harvest Festival instead. The Harvest Dinner has been hosted by the gals for over 40 years and has been the main fundraiser for the group. The funds raised help to provide scholarships to high school seniors, as well as to purchase necessary items for the Church and to provide other donations around the community. This year's event will be a joint fundraising effort with the...

Someone once criticized me, telling me, everything with you is a story. And I think he was right – but I don't take it as a criticism, I see it as acknowledgement of a gift, to be shared. This is my story of Lawrence Green. Lawrence Green was nothing much, really. He was diminutive, he did not stand out in a crowd, unless the crowd happened to be a brawl, in which case, Lawrence was probably knocking the stuffing out of someone twice his size. Some would like that about Lawrence. But he did n...

UMW stands for United Methodist Women. We meet once a month at the Methodist church. We have a great time, a time that is interdenominational. This means we welcome anyone to attend and join us in worshiping God and donating to many charities in Big Sandy and Montana. We donate money to the fire department, the food bank, a women’s rescue home in Great Falls, a women’s prison, and disadvantaged children at Christmas. We provide mittens, hats, scarves, and socks. We also send several boxes for individual children with clothing and a toy. If we...

They are new to our community. Would you please welcome Gary and Carolyn Mosier? I am so excited for them to be here because they volunteered to help me cover the sports in our community, which can be challenging at times. Difficult to catch coaches and stats because an article is much more than the score. They moved to Big Sandy after they retired to help out at Big Sandy Organics Gary was a facility's manager after he retired from doTERRA essential oils. Carolyn was an office manager and an...

This year marked the 28th year that Chandee Baumgardner has sold Indian Tacos at the Choteau County Fair. I spoke with Chandee while she was cooking flatbread in the deep fryer. It was obvious that she has prepped 3 decades worth of the local favorite, while she answered my questions and engaged customers at the counter. She explained that she could mix and cook the bread in her sleep at this point. When I pointed out that the first time I had ever eaten Indian Tacos, they were from her...

On September15 at 7 p.m. at the City Hall, there will be a town meeting to discuss the new storm drainage system going down the main street, replacing the old nonworking drains on Johannes. The project will start next spring. After the drains are installed, the main street will get a new coat of asphalt. The city council would love a large turnout to this town hall meeting, especially if you have any questions. Mayor Shaud Schwarzbach said, "We got this done, and we didn't have to raise taxes!"...

The day before school started and I was visiting the FE Miley grade school for the open house. She was in the third grade and recognized me and just needed to tell me about everything she bought for school. She was so excited she had a new pair of shoes that sparkled. She wanted to know if I wanted to take a picture of her shoes for the paper. I went to the school and took that picture because sometimes it's this kind of story that is the most important. We are back to school! And once again,...

This last weekend the 10th annual was held at the Big Sandy Skate Park. There were around 200 people in attendance; the furthest away was Alex from Costa Rica. "Dan was coming from Brazil but couldn't because of COVID." They came from all over the United States to take part in the event. Everyone knows Randy Katen, who was a professional in the 70's. They told me to talk to him because he knows everything about skateboarding. I went to where he had a chair in the shade and asked for an...
The 2021 Chouteau County 4-H and FFA livestock carcass contest took place at Pioneer Meats in Big Timber. A total of 55 Chouteau County 4-H animals were evaluated for carcass quality by Mark King (MSU Extension Sweet Grass County). The purpose of the carcass contest is to teach 4-H youth how to correctly select, feed and finish livestock based on carcass data. If carcass criteria are met, youth can be confident they are producing a quality product that is safe, nutritious and good tasting to the consumer. Out of 32 market swine entered at the C...
Two signs with two fundraising thermometers now adorn the sidewalk near City Hall. Don’t be confused: there are NOT two swimming pool fundraising efforts going on; just one. The two signs and two thermometers are about a fundraiser within a fundraiser. The big sign announces the overall effort which has now passed the quarter million milestone, with close to $270,000 contributed to date. A sizeable portion of that amount has come from grants from businesses, service organizations, and foundations. The majority, however, has come from the g...
