Big Sandy Medical Services Foundation is pleased to announce they will once again be awarding scholarships to students pursuing a medical career. For the 2018-2019 college year, up to three $300 scholarships will be given – one to a graduating senior, one to a college student already enrolled in a college, and the third to a second deserving applicant in one of these groups, depending on applications received. Severin Heimbigner, son of Lianna and Conrad Heimbigner, just finished his goal. He earned his Arrow of Light Award. It is the highest level a Cub Scott can reach. The Lippard-Clawiter Foundation has released their list of county-wide distributions for 2017. The Foundation awards grants to non profit organizations all cross Chouteau County. This year they contributed a total of $422,485, that is about $15, 000 less than last years contributions. The Lippard – Clawiter Foundation was first started in the 1980’s. For the most part, everyone watching a sporting event cheers for their team to win, so does everyone watching Pioneer Basketball. For the boys, it was a great win, but for me this time I went to watch it all. Really watch it. There are 34 students standing in a semi-circle singing the National Anthem in perfect harmony. Darin Schuster, Chouteau Country Commissioner informed me there were cuts to Chouteau County that would affect us immediately. That night the TV news confirmed what he had told me. The Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees local public assistance had their budget cut by $49 million. The state of Montana is closing half of its 38 Office of Public Assistance. As we enter the season of complaining about the snow and cold, reminders of this summer’s drought remain in the form of haystacks, cows and pocketbooks that are all far too thin. The same is true for deer and other wildlife species. Some impacts of the drought were immediate, like low chick survival for pheasants and sharptails.
