Severin Heimbigner, son of Lianna and Conrad Heimbigner, just finished his goal. He earned his Arrow of Light Award. It is the highest level a Cub Scott can reach. That is an enormous achievement and should be celebrated. What triggered the project was his involvement in the Gifted and Talented Program at the grade school. The Gifted and Talented is taught by his teacher Shelbi Darlington. I went over to the FE Miley Grade School and visited with Shelbi Darlington to understand what triggered...

  • Big Sandy Pioneer Basketball: It's Worth the Price of a Ticket

    Zoe Merrill|Jan 10, 2018

For the most part, everyone watching a sporting event cheers for their team to win, so does everyone watching Pioneer Basketball. For the boys, it was a great win, but for me this time I went to watch it all. Really watch it. There are 34 students standing in a semi-circle singing the National Anthem in perfect harmony. That alone is worth the price of a ticket to attend the game. While the girls were being introduced they ran over and gave a high-five to Mike, a resident of Big Sandy Activities which made his entire year! That alone is worth...

  • Drought harms more than just the landscape

    Melissa Foster|Jan 3, 2018

Drought impacts wildlife, too. As we enter the season of complaining about the snow and cold, reminders of this summer’s drought remain in the form of haystacks, cows and pocketbooks that are all far too thin. The same is true for deer and other wildlife species. Some impacts of the drought were immediate, like low chick survival for pheasants and sharptails. Lack of moisture meant low numbers of beetles and other bugs that provide protein critical for chicks to grow during the first couple weeks of life. Poor chick production equates to d...

  • Getting by

    Janell Barber|Dec 27, 2017

Children learn from watching their parents or caregivers earn, shop, save and borrow. As the top influence in their financial lives, you do not need to be a money expert to help them start out strong. As adults, most see financial well-being as: having control over day-to-day, month-to-month finances, capacity to absorb a financial shock, being on track to meet financial goals and having the financial freedom to make the choices that allow them to enjoy life. By helping your children develop important behaviors, knowledge, skills and personal...
