I had to ask how does one help change their attitude during the long frigid days and being stuck in house for hours like everyone did last month. After researching attitude adjustment, I did find some helpful suggestions, I thought I would share, because let’s face it living here now with this weather is depressing. It is for me, and I can’t image what it is like for those who have to be out in the weather all day, all night long. I’ve been watering outside animals with frozen water hoses and pipes. Furnaces have stopped working. Pickups breaki...

The BSE is an exam conducted by veterinarians that includes a physical exam, semen evaluation, and an internal and external exam of the reproductive tract. The BSE should be...
What does this mean? We have all seen the colorful banners posted on roadsides, near ranch entries, and even in the windows of town businesses. A cowboy sits on horseback in front of a sunset with the words “Save the Cowboy, Stop the APR” emblazoned across the sky. Picturesque to say the least, but what does it really mean? Why must we stop the APR to save the cowboy? This is the question recently posed to me, Dana Darlington, and as current President of North Central Stockgrowers, the current chairman of the Big Sandy Conservation District, pa...

While in the midst of tax season, it can be stressful finding the necessary records to get your taxes done. Have you sworn to yourself every year during this time you will keep better records for next year? But, it never really ends up the way you hoped? There are also the questions of “How much and how long do I keep the records?” or “Why do I need to have a record keeping system?” Just like other important records, keeping financial records are also a vital part of your life. They are a key to your credit standing, justification on your ta...
According to Chouteau County’s contract land-use planner, Jerry Grebenc, the County Planning Board and County Commissioners have been working on revisions to the County Development Regulations. The original regulations which were adopted in 1985 and revised in 2011, require permits for the development of homes and new commercial and industrial projects. The Planning Board and Commission saw a number of things that needed to be updated and amended to not only comply with state statute, but also to be more practical for County residents. Some o...

The Big Sandy Medical Center held its monthly board meeting. All regular meetings are open to the public only there was only one guest at this meeting which was me. The financial report was not handed out as they were waiting for paperwork to be sent to them so they can close out the month. Board members reviewed the bills for the month and approved payment. They did ask questions when they didn't recognize what the bills were for. For example, some staff were sent for a variety of training....
For the last five years, FE Miley Elementary Teachers have been working very hard to improve our Reading scores. It’s been a long process, but we have made huge gains and have some amazing data and scores we want to share with you. Before we get into all of our data, here is some background knowledge that will help you understand the data better. The model we based our interventions on is called the RTI model, and that means we put our students into three tiers, or categories. MISSOULA, Mont. Winter Fertilization Facts Fall and winter broadcast application of urea (46-0-0) continues to take place on various winter wheat farms across Chouteau County. The major concern of broadcasting urea is nitrogen loss through ammonia volatilization. Volatilization results when there is a conversion from dissolved ammonia to ammonia gas. From 2008-2012, Rick Engel and Clain Jones (MSU Soil Scientists) have studied NH3 losses from surface-applied urea. Below are a few conclusions of their research. • Engle’s research (4 years and 20 studies) doc...

I have always been impressed with spelling winners, primarily because they spell words I can't. I've never been able to spell. I loathed the times when I would ask my teachers how to spell a certain word and they would tell me to go look it up in the dictionary. The problem with that was I usually had no idea what letter the word started with let alone the extra letters in the word. I find it fascinating we now have spelling programs on the computers which will underline a word in red if it...

The school year reached their 100 days of school February 19th and they celebrated it in style. The grade school students were encouraged to come to school looking like what they might look if they were 100 years old. My granddaughter dressed up. She said, "I'm gonna be an energized 100 yr. old". She even brought her dumbbell to school with her. But my one grandson said, "you should have dressed up like gramma. Then you'd be old." They gave out 100 calorie snacks, and at the end of the day they...

Connie Green called me and asked me if I had read Bob Quinn's book Grain by Grain yet. I told her I hadn't but that I planned to. Connie told me it was a really good book, and she thought everyone in Big Sandy should read it. She said it held her interest clear to the end. It was just an amazing book. I've read it now and believe anyone in agriculture should read it. Anyone interested in eating healthier should read it too. There will be a chance to buy a copy at the book reveal at the Big...

Shari Jenkins Schmit lives and creates in Great Falls now, but her love for art has always been there. She remembers when she was in the 1st grade in Fort Benton and as a Brownie participated in the town of Fort Benton's Valentine contest. Shari remembers she took her mom's red velvet and made her valentine heart with it. She glued the little heart candies that have sayings on them all around the edge. "Anyway, I won, and my picture was in the River Press." She moved to Big Sandy in 1967 when...

At the time I am writing this, the forecast for the next couple weeks has us nowhere near at or above freezing. With the cold we have already experienced and will continue to experience, it brings with it concerns of safety. Hypothermia and frostbite are definitely something you want to avoid but there also other concerns that come with the cold such as loss of coordination and impairment of judgment that may lead to accidents or other types of injuries. Wind and moisture have a huge impact on our body’s ability to regulate temperature. A...
