  • Long teaches Spanish

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

Superintendent Moore calls Bridgette Long one seventh of a teacher. Bridgette is a new teacher at Big Sandy Junior High teaching Spanish. She teaches one period out of seven a day, hence one seventh of a teacher. Actually Superintendent Moore is very happy to have Bridgette as a foreign language teacher is needed in Montana schools and Bridgette fits the bill very well. Bridgette did not learn Spanish at Big Sandy High School where she graduated and went through all twelve grades. She went to...

  • Sperry Chalet burned Bear Paw Fire is looking better

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

There was big fire news on two fronts last week. The East Fork fire led by a wind from hell got out of containment and went every which way all week long. Monday, September 4 was the first time in over a week that there was not a smoke smell on the prairie and a person could see all the way to Baldy from US 87. The fire started on the Warrick road just before getting to the Dumas summer ranch. From there it went into reservation for a little way but mainly roared down Little Box Elder Creek. Seldom did the fire get west of Beaver Creek and it...

  • Drought Hurts Fish, Too

    Bruce Auchly|Sep 6, 2017

When drought and the accompanying heat hits, attention tends to focus on withering crops, explosive wildfires and subsoil moisture. While those drought-caused problems are obvious, creatures that spend their lives underwater and out of sight can suffer as well. If a stream bed dries up, of course, fish don’t do well. But even before that final step, higher temperatures and reduced stream flow hurt. The Smith River south of Great Falls is a good example. “This has been a particularly tough year on the Smith,” said Grant Grisak, Fish, Wildl...

  • From The Mayor's Desk

    Robert Lucke|Sep 6, 2017

The regular August City Council meeting was held on August 10th. The Pledge was recited, minutes were approved, there were no public comments and there was one visitor. There was no Sheriff’s report. Concerning the new water project, several calls have been made to Rural Development and it looks like it is funded and headed for a spring start up. Before that can happen there will have to be some public meetings to let people know what is happening. The Brown Field project which concerns the old Service Station in Big Sandy got some bad news w...

  • Kulbeck honors prairie cemetery

    Robert Lucke and Vicki Kulbeck|Aug 30, 2017

Old cemeteries can tell a huge amount of history and are becoming more popular all the time to find out just who lived in what age and in many cases how they died as well. The cemetery at Hungry Hollow just east of Clear Creek is choked with lilacs and among those lilacs are names of children who died of influenza, and old timers who died after one might think they should. The cemeteries in Zortman and Landusky, one choked out with iris, the other in an old growth forest tell many stories. At...

  • Fire Season Update ever changing

    Robert Lucke|Aug 30, 2017

With September just around the corner, the fire season, heat and drought lingers on. It will be with us until the winter snows and let’s just hope that no big fires get started now and that we get a good snow early on to help put out what is raging. Actually it looks like things are a little better at the end of August. The horrible Lolo fire just south of Missoula seems to be getting more under control. Missoula residents said that last week they saw the peak of Mount Lolo for the first time in weeks. Some evacuations have been lifted in t...

  • Trustees wrestle with School taxes

    Bard Moore|Aug 23, 2017

The summer was a stressful time for schools across the state as they prepared their budgets for the upcoming school year. There were same major changes implemented into the school finance funding formula imposed by the state legislators during the last session. The first major change was the passage of HB 647. This change took a large share of the state’s portion of school funding away from the school districts. For Big Sandy it was $185,000. The state will now keep this money and they shifted the tax burden to the local taxpayers. This was a...

  • Crystal Geyer heads up Senior Center

    Robert Lucke|Aug 23, 2017

A couple of years ago "The Mountaineer" interviewed a new cook at the Senior Citizens Center. Her name was Crystal Geyer. When we did that interview we concluded that Crystal had been a wise choice as a cook. Her love of people, her getting along with staff and her love for cooking and food made her a natural in any kitchen. Unfortunately for the Senior Citizens Center Crystal took a job as an aide at the elementary school and her expertise was lost to Big Sandy seniors for a year. That was a...

  • The Sprague Complex of fires in Glacier National Park expected remain the same until the snow falls

    Robert Lucke|Aug 23, 2017

The fire alert from Glacier National Park which is included here is included because Glacier officials say that the Sprague Complex of fires will remain the same or maybe grow a little until the snow falls at the beginning of winter. So, as you read through this report, chances are that the trails mentioned here will stay closed until the end of the summer season. If you are heading for Glacier soon, a good rule of thumb is to not go on any trails close to Sperry Chalet as they will probably be closed unless the weather changes drastically. Wes...

Two backcountry skiers have discovered the body of a young woman embedded in the ice of a remote mountain creek. All through the night police work with the arc lights and chain saws to dig her out. It doesn’t take long to identify the victim as Abbie Cooper, whose picture illuminated law enforcement computers all across America. Once viewed as the perfect daughter by all who knew her, Abbie has been on the run for murder. But what caused Benja...
