I have struggled with this for a year now, hoping I would not have to increase the cost of advertisements. However, when Havre Daily’s newspaper print broke down, and I had to have Helena print the paper, the price of printing rose four times what it was costing me at Havre. After Havre had their printers fixed, their costs increased. I cannot meet my expenses without raising the cost of my advertisements. I haven’t raised the cost of the advertisements for four years. I hope everyone will continue to support the Mountaineer as I need to mak...

The organizational meeting of the Pioneer Parent Organization met at the Big Sandy Library. The purpose is to find ways to support the teachers of Big Sandy. Both teachers and parents will belong to the organization so they can communicate needs and ideas. Every idea is doable. For example, suppose you want to offer to help do little things. In that case, you can make copies, laminate items, cut out items, hand out backpack buddies, help at the book fair, bake goodies for the teacher's lounge,...
Ron Wiens is still the acting CEO; however, the Medical Center is still looking for a permanent CEO. Anyone interested in the position should contact the Medical Center to require how to apply. I attended the monthly board meeting of the Board of Directors for BSMC. There were 29 people in attendance, all associated with the medical center except myself. I want to express that this will not be meeting minutes, primarily because by the time it gets to print, many agenda items will have changed. Sarah Schlepp reported that currently, the Medical...

The Big Sandy Library kicked off Library Card Sign-Up Month with the first of a series of live musical performances when Michelle Danreuther played piano for library patrons the afternoon of Tuesday, September 13th. The national La-La-La-Library Card Sign-Up campaign features musicians performing in libraries to raise awareness. The Cascades by Scott Joplin, The Waterfall by Jon Schmidt, and Doctor Gradus Ad Parnassum by Claude Debussy were the three pieces Michelle chose to play for library...

During the county fair, I set out to write articles highlighting incoming seniors with long histories of involvement in FFA and 4H competition. Both of the students I interview, Lance Rutledge and Jaycee Worrall, did well in the competitions this year and were interesting to interview. Though I originally planned to focus on seniors, I was repeatedly encouraged to write about Alex Worrall as well. Alex is in the 9th grade and has just switched to FFA after 8 years in 4H. "I showed a pig and a...

It was a scorching day, over 100 degrees, with a strong wind of plus 20 miles an hour. Red flags warning were out when the fire alarm went off in Big Sandy. It was the kind of day that everyone needed to respond. The rumor was that it was arson because the fire was so sporadic. However, it was started by a contractor working on a cabin formerly owned by Keith Edwards and now owned by a relative. It was purely unintentional. He couldn't stop it and drove immediately to a place where there was...

"It's been awesome," explained Sydnie Stellpflug, the new Second Grade teacher, when I asked her about her experience at F.E. Miley Elementary School. "As a first year teacher, I was super nervous. I feel like I have every question in the world. But everyone's been super helpful. They jump right in and answer. They're checking on me throughout the day. 'Hey, is everything okay?' 'Do you need anything?'" Sydney was born and raised on a ranch in Wyoming. She graduated from the University of...

It's great to have it back! Everyone has missed the Medical Guild rummage sale. Twenty-nine people came to the luncheon, and ten of those were new younger people. Lisa Sipler was extremely happy to see new younger people caring about the medical center. It is good when we get involved and give back to our community. These new volunteers have already started working! They also have a new vice president--Laci Labuda. And Michele Robertson volunteered to be responsible for the PR and...
Fall Management of Cheatgrass in Fallow Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), also commonly called downy brome, is a problematic weed in winter wheat and in rangeland throughout Montana. Cheatgrass typically germinates in the autumn, overwinters, and produces seed by mid-summer. The cheatgrass life cycle is similar to winter wheat. Cheatgrass is an abundant seed producer. Seed is only viable for one to two years in the seedbank and can be killed under drought conditions. Cheatgrass germinates from late August to early October and matures in early...

One of the most frustrating things I deal with at the Mountaineer is that we are only a weekly. The time frame of getting things in often feels late after the fact. Also, it creates issues for people who want their information in the paper but get it to me too late to make the deadline. The deadline is Friday by noon, except for those articles about weekend events. Why Friday? Because putting the paper together is like a six/eight-page jigsaw puzzle, which takes time. We send the paper out to the printers by 10:30 AM Monday so it can be...
The Senior Center has been open for one month. By their own admission when it first opened, they needed to work on it to make it run smoother. They’ve done that now. There are many things that are making it work. The most amazing thing is the number of volunteers stepping up to make it successful. They have a new working set of bylaws. The financial review has been completed, and it has been used to make a budget they can work with. Between 37 and 50 meals are being served each day. I’ve eaten there, so I know it’s good. According to the contra...

Committee members Jessica Ophus, Judy Yirsa, Sarah Sura, and Kathy Camp have taken an idea and made it, even after just one year, an event everyone looks forward to. My grandchildren spent the entire day there last year. Jessica said she got involved by accident. It was supposed to be a different Jessica, but they called her by accident. She's glad they did, because she believes we need to do more things to celebrate. The purpose of this article is to highlight the event, but more important, to...

Big Sandy Church of God will be hosting its 11th annual Brisket Cook-Off September 25th. The barbecue will be served up to guests at 1 PM. Everyone is invited and the meal is free. Come out and join us for fun, fellowship, and the opportunity to vote in the people's choice competition for the best local brisket cook. We are also looking for competitors. We can currently accommodate 12 cooks in the competition. The first cook-off, over a decade ago, started out as a bit of a joke between Brook...

Throughout the summer, and for two more weeks, the Havre Chamber of Commerce has hosted a farmers market. The market itself happens right in the town square on the Hi-Line, on the edge of the downtown area. My wife and I decided to check it out this past Saturday as a day out together. The Market itself featured a couple dozen vendors and live music. You can find anything from jewelry to art to fresh produce there, making browsing the various booths an enjoyable experience on its own. The real...
Six 4-H and FFA Youth Meet Excellence Criteria for Livestock Carcass Quality The 2022 Chouteau County 4-H and FFA livestock carcass contest took place at Pioneer Meats in Big Timber. The purpose of the carcass contest is to teach youth how to correctly select, feed and finish livestock based on carcass data. If carcass criteria are met, youth can be confident they are producing a quality product that is safe, nutritious and good ta...

It was a very successful Fireman's Auction at Loma this last weekend. The auction, which goes into the general fund to help pay for the event, brought in over $10,000. Overall they raised over $24,000 for the various fire departments. Todd Witt said there were around 300 people this year, which is hard to determine because it is a bigger space. There was exceptional support from farmers and ranchers during the auction. Always amazing that during drought and challenging times, people come togethe...

The Montana Actor's Theater production of Macbeth ran for three showings in Beaver Creek State Park over the weekend of August 25th through the 28th. The choice of venue and scale of the production made the show a sensational experience for both the audience and the actors. It was clear this show was going to be something special during the opening scenes, which recreated the battle that sets the tragic tale of Macbeth in motion. Sword fighting and horses galloping back and forth across the...

Incoming Big Sandy High School senior, Jaycee Worrall, excelled in this year's County Fair FFA competitions and her 4H leadership project entry. This year, she entered a steer named Gerald and a pig named Fred. Both her steer and pig entries received reserve senior showman. In addition, her steer got a callback, which means that it was in the running for the best position in the competition. Jaycee has been entering animals into competitions for 9 years, and enjoys the experience and learning th...
September Horticulture Management Managing horticultural landscapes in September is essential to healthy production during the growing season. Below are a few recommendations for Chouteau County gardeners. • The average first frost is September 15 (Carter), September 18 (Kenilworth and Highwood), September 20 (Big Sandy), September 25 (Fort Benton) and September 28 in (Geraldine). All fruit and vegetables should be harvested before temperatures drop below 40° to 50°F. • Ripen tomatoes in a paper bag along with an apple, or hang the entir...
First, I have to say, as the Interim CEO for Big Sandy Medical Center, how much I’ve appreciated the warm welcome and engaging conversations with so many of you already and looking forward to meeting others of you as the weeks go on. And it’s been a pleasure working at Big Sandy Medical Center which in my opinion has some of the best employees in Montana. The community is very fortunate to have a local hospital, clinic and wellness center staffed with such dedicated and compassionate caregivers and support staff. Every day they strive to pro...

When asked the status of the storm drain project, he said, "It's a mess!" And then he laughed. They are still on target; instead of paving the east side when scheduled, they decided to pave both sides together because the Great Falls Refinery is closed down. They will not reopen till September 18th. They can get asphalt from Havre, but they need the oil from the refinery. Therefore paying will not start till after September 18th....
