Montana’s millions of acres of private land offer some excellent hunting opportunities—the only catch is gaining the landowner’s permission to hunt. It is Montana law that hunters obtain landowner permission to hunt on all private land. Here are a few things to keep in mind that will greatly improve results when attempting to secure hunting access to private land. • Show courtesy to the landowner and make hunting arrangements by calling or visiting at times convenient to the landowner. • Plan ahead and secure permission well in advance o...

For the first time, the Big Sandy Medical Guild Rummage Sale was three days long, getting over Saturday at noon. There were too many people to thank, and the fear of forgetting one meant neither Lisa Sipler nor Reggie Jappe would attempt a list of helpers. However, this large event takes many community members to pull off. This year the high school students once again helped. The football team arrived with their pickups and helped set up. Monday Morning, the first two periods of ag classes came...

He uses a Plasma Cutter big enough to work with 4 x 8 sheet metal. He can go up to a half inch thick, however, he generally uses a 14 gauge for the signs he creates. He...

Alzheimer’s Disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 14 million. Between 2000 and 2017, deaths from Alzheimer’s increased 145%. To break this as...

There is a new Parent Support Group starting in Big Sandy. It is for parents of kids with medical and special needs. Rachel Baumgarn is starting the group. According to her she has discovered once again, that Colby and her, raise their children with the support of the community. It is difficult to raise children with medical needs and often parents of children with learning disabilities face peers that do not understand why their child acts a certain way. A poster that Rachel built for the Facebook says, “Parenting is hard, and it is made even...

Fire can be mesmerizing. Anyone can sit for a long time by a fire pit or a fire-place just watching it burn, but a grass fire races towards you is a totally different thing. Instantly everyone realizes the danger. Quick frantic calls to 911 and to surrounding neighbors begins. As one of those neighbors, when a fire is received and you pick up the phone, the caller is always speaking fast and a little out of breath as fear takes hold. However, what usually happens when a smoke from a fire is...
Although Chili Feed is about celebrating local heroes and is the annual fund raiser it is also when the firefighters visit the schools and talk to the students about fire safety. In part, it’s something all families should discuss. Here is a starting place for families to talk about fire safety. I found this list as I researched the topic on line. I have a friend who lost their home in a fire that started at night. The entire house was lost. After talking to him I felt it was important we visit the topic of fire safety. Talk to the children a...
June 19-21, 2020. The committee chose the theme of “Pioneer Heroes” because we believe that every person ever involved with the school has contributed heroically to something. Or someone. Somewhere. Sometime. We wish to encourage you to gear up for Homecoming! Dig out your annuals or visit mtmemory.org and type “big sandy yearbooks” into the searchbar and remember faces, events and teachers. Then contact those friends and see if they will meet you next June. Some have offered specific help—now is the time to remind us again. Some may think the...
Should I spray Canada thistle this Fall? According to Tim Seipel, MSU Cropland Weed Extension Specialist, producers need to wait until it warms up before they spray. Hopefully, producers will get another window of good fall weather to get out and clean up fields. Glyphosate will not be absorbed if temperatures are below 40 degrees. In addition, spraying depends on what is going to be sprayed. Canada thistle stalks from this year were recently hammered by the cold. Stalks have most likely finished moving sugars around especially if the...

I was invited to go to the sneak preview of the North 40 as a representative of the press. I went because I am a farmer's wife who has discussed numerous times around the dining room table, "I wonder what all will be in the new North 40". We were met at the door by North 40 Outfitters Community Relations Coordinator Drew Steinberger and by Sales Presentation Manager John Teini. John has worked for 30 years in the farm and ranch industry. Before that, he was born and raised in Roundup and still c...
Hey Big Sandy Pioneers! We are hoping to use your Pioneer Heroes for promotion and production of Homecoming 2020. By November 15, 2019, (just over a month from now) Facebook or email a brief (around 30 seconds and definitely under a minute) video or statement telling us about your Pioneer hero – who they are, why they are your hero, what they have done to impact you and/or society, etc. Think about classmates or friends who are alumni (living or deceased) who might fit into any of these categories – Arts (dance, music, photography, pai...

National 4-H week: It takes 4-H leaders In 4-H, it takes leaders, adults that care, willing to volunteer. Leaders have always stepped up. According to the 4-H web page, they say, "Research shows that 4 H helps young people excel beyond their peers. The 4 H Study of Positive Youth Development, conducted by Tufts University, explores the impact...
On September 17th, 2019, I got the honor of reporting on the school board meeting at the high school. I got to see some familiar people, along with with meet some new folks. Kelly Rutledge, Maryetta Engle, Darin Genereux, Kelly Holland, and Brad Weaver were all the attendees at the meeting this month. The student council, as usual, had some great ideas. They discussed themes for the upcoming Chili Feed and Spirit Week. The themes have not yet been decided, but I am excited to see the final theme. Events like these are essential because they...

For the last eight weeks we have been working diligently to get everything ready for this conversion. Most of this work is done "behind the scenes," as a majority of what is changing has to do with licensing, billing, and documentation. Last week the conversion team from Alabama arrived to train our staff in their respective departments. They were surprised with how versatile our staff is, making multiple comments about all the "hats" our staff wear. We truly do have the best here at BSMC. As of...
The article below is a portion of an article written by Peter Kolb (MSU Extension Forester). The article is available in full at the Chouteau County Extension office. The article explains the natural phenomenon of fall needle drop, insect management, and proper watering techniques for pine and spruce trees. Every fall a lot of concern arises when conifers such as pines, spruces and firs start to drop their older needle cohorts in preparation for winter. This is essentially an energy conservation mechanism for surviving the winter as all living...
