Mary Ophus, from Big Sandy, took the first-place honors with this picture of farm life. She took this picture while out on the farm doing chores besides the chicken coop. It was taken last March "during that awful winter." Mary thought it was beautiful day and grabbed her cell phone to capture the light. "I'm not a fan of snow but the sun shining on it was beautiful." She likes taking photographs and takes a number of them. The Mountaineer hopes to see more of her photographs in the future....

She had surgery on her leg on New Year's Eve, that makes three surgeries since May so making quilts gives her a real sense of accomplishment because she's been non-weight baring for nine months. She already has Big Sandy's Library Quilt for 2019 already made. It has nine...
Management Methods for Cows during the Calving Season Managing cows to rebreed as scheduled is an important practice during the calving season. Below are a few good management practices to remember from the Cow-Calf Management Guide Section CL115. • The above-average milking cow will need about 30 pounds of hay per day. • Ration balancing using the animal’s nutrient requirements and the nutrient composition of the feed resource should be used to determine appropriate ration. The Chouteau County Extension office has an excellent ration balan...

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, deadly gas. This is why it is so dangerous. High concentrations can cause death within just a few minutes of breathing it while lower levels can make you sick. When appliances are properly installed and maintained, they produce only small amounts of carbon monoxide. Anything that disrupts the burning process or results in a shortage of oxygen can increase carbon monoxide production. Wood, coal and charcoal fires always produce carbon monoxide, as do gasoline engines. It is important to check...

January of every year has lots of farm forums around the state of Montana. Except for delivery of grain and feeding livestock agriculture farmers and ranchers are finding time to attend. I heard the other day that there is still a need for health insurance for farmers and ranchers, but no one seems to be visiting about that. Speakers are discussing with attendees that they need to write a business plan every year. Revisit your skills to determine training you may need to learn, i.e. agricultural...

We all know we should do more of this but we do not seem to do it. It is to drink more water. Although there are many people who do drink water as their beverage of choice, many of us others could definitely increase our water intake. But why? You have heard all of these before but here they are again as a reminder. Water: - Fuels muscles by transporting oxygen, fat and glucose to keep them working. Muscles contain 75 percent water so a lot of water is required to maintain that level or even more to gain muscle. - Maintains good blood volume...

Morgan Simpson was a cheerleader in Big Sandy when she was in high school. She was a cheerleader for two years in 2002 and 2003. She really enjoyed it. I asked her if that was why she wanted to be a coach. Morgan told me, “The girls approached me. They wanted a program again. And there is no reason there shouldn’t be a program. We have the girls that have the interest in it. We have the uniforms. They fit and they look good. They just needed a coach to help them.” Morgan moved to Big Sandy...
Editor’s Note: The following are excerpts taken from the Centennial Calendar (1885-1985) that was complied by Doug Giebel. January 9, 1919 At about 2:00 p.m. our train arrived in Big Sandy. The weather was mild for January, there was only a little snow on the ground and snow on the hills and mountains. It sure looked cold and bleak, cheerless, far, wide, and bare to people used to the trees and bushes of Iowa. I was about sick with the “grippe” and wanted to go to bed. Somehow the freight train had arrived just before the passenger train...
Winter watering is important to evergreens during thawing periods Winter desiccation can be very hard on evergreen trees. Dry soil in winter often cannot replace the moisture trees lose to the cold dry winter air. The symptoms of winter damage and die back may not become visible until spring or summer growth begins. Winter damaged trees may only show a few dead branches or twigs. In most severe cases, the entire tree may die. Evergreen trees are more susceptible to winter desiccation than deciduous trees as the evergreens retain their needles...
