There is nothing more important in any community than the education of its young people. If not where have you...
#1 Buddy Day- As a new teacher here, I was indoctrinated into this tradition through trial by fire as I was on recess duty that day. There I was on the playground with 60 or so elementary kids, just barely mastering all their names, add to that 60 or so Junior High/High School kids who I had no clue about. I feared it would be chaos, but that didn’t happen. What did happen was pure magic, and it happens every year during Buddy Day. The Big Buddies and Little Buddies have so much fun having lunch and playing at recess together that I would be ha...
The Medical Guild Rummage Sale is upon us, this October 5th from 8 to 5 and 6th from 9 to 4. We all look forward to the opportunity to clean out our closets for a good cause, pick up a few odds and ends at a good price, and indulge in a half dozen or so slices of pie at the pie counter. My first year in Big Sandy, my daughter and I ate 18 slices of pie at the pie counter and have looked forward to the event every year since. Though in the years that have followed, I’ve discovered another, bigger reason to appreciate the Guild Sale: It’s an opp...

We wish these new teachers well and hope that they find living in Big Sandy is an adventure in good neighbors and dear hearts. Following are...

Well over a hundred people visited the Big Sandy Museum this summer and from the comments received around town, those people knew they had been somewhere and seen something. Our Big Sandy Museum may not be world class but it is certainly in an upper class when comparing it to other museums in Montana. Tina Rodewald is the Director of the museum. Traci Rodewald is the curator and Dale Morey is the volunteer who put in countless hours just for the love of the Museum and Big Sandy. There are new...
Almost everyone has a bucket list or wishes they would choose to do if they ever had a chance to do them. Years ago, some folks made their bucket lists into seasonal lists of things to do during that particular season. It is fall and we have even had a tad of fall like weather to prove it. My fall bucket list is probably similar to yours and maybe different as well. This fall bucket list is not in order of what to do first and so on. Rather it is just a series of suggestions about what fall has to offer that you might not have thought of. Fall...

Times are changing, people are changing, our education system is changing, but we are learning and growing right along with it. As members of the student body at Big Sandy High School, in a dual credit education class, we took it upon ourselves to take a closer look at the true climate in Big Sandy High School after a recently published Havre Daily News article provided a nearly negative outlook on our learning environment. In our dual credit class we are learning the proper ways to shape young...

Darlene Cline is the new librarian at the Jeff Reichelt Memorial Library in Big Sandy. She took over as head librarian on July 31. Darlene knows her way around the library as she helped out with story time at the library and when she was young and lived on a ranch outside of Bynum, she spent much time in the library just doing her homework. Darlene was raised in Bynum on a cattle ranch on the Rocky Mountain Front and she still misses those beautiful mountains to look at each day. She does not...
When the Bear Paw East Fork was raging a friend brought a lot of equipment to the Bear Paws to help fight the fire. He also brought his eight year old boy. That first hot, windy night, the friend was told to build a fire line for several miles with his bulldozer. His eight year old son got on a smaller bulldozer and to the amazement of everyone watching, took off after his dad to help with the fire line. They had portable radios and so at the home base, listeners heard things like the father say, “How are you doing buddy?” “Just fine Dad, my ga...
Factors Affecting Wheat Germination and Stand Establishment in Hot Soils Hot soil conditions at sowing also reduce coleoptile length. The coleoptile is a rigid, protective structure that covers the emerging shoot to aid it in reaching the soil surface. Once the coleoptile breaks the soil surface, it stops grow¬ing and the first true leaf emerges. If the coleoptile does not emerge through the soil surface, the first true leaf emerges below ground, takes on an accordion-like appearance, and the wheat plant typically dies. For this reason, wheat...
