Christmas Tree Care There are many “tips” to caring for a Christmas tree that propose to make it last longer or stay greener. In truth, all a tree really needs to maintain freshness is adequate water. This is easily done by using the proper tree stand and keeping the water level in the stand above the base of the tree. The following tips will help to maintain the freshness and aroma of a live Christmas tree this holiday season: • Use a tree stand that holds enough water for the size of the tree. The rule of thumb is one quart of water per o...

Recent grizzly bear attacks involving hunters reinforces the importance of being bear aware in Montana, even with a thick layer of snow on the ground in most parts of the state. During the past weekend, hunters were attacked by bears in separate incidents. In one incident, in southwest Montana in Tom Miner Basin, a hunter was hiking in to retrieve an elk. He encountered a bear and deployed bear spray. He sustained minor injuries in the attack. In another incident near Pendroy, north of Choteau...

Bear Paw Mountains rancher Micky Kane had an idea one day. Kane was a very good hunter and loved the trophies he could bring home from his various hunts. But his house was filled with trophies and there were seemingly more to come because that is the way of a trophy hunter, there are never enough and there is that one full mount of a record breaking moose or a Kodiak bear ready to attack, again another record breaker. What to do with all his mounts was his question? Then it came to him. Add...

Oh, no, “The Mountaineer” is going to try and predict the weather once again. Recently on the street one wag was talking to another and the one said, “Why don’t they just give up. They are worse than the National Weather Service!” I imagined that the two were talking of a recent weather story that was written at “The Mountaineer” and was none too accurate. I had to laugh because although our story was none too accurate, we got it from the National Weather Service so we could not possibly be worse than they are. We don’t knock the National Weath...

Chamber of Commerce people have heard that more and more Big Sandy is getting a very good reputation for having many Christmas lights each Christmas Season. That all starts soon now with the Griswold Christmas Party. That is an occasion for business people along with residential dwellers to bring out their Christmas lights and hang them while it is still fairly warm out, then head to Agri-Prairie for Tom and Jerrys and good cheer. The Griswold Christmas Party starts on November 17 around 12:30pm. The more people that are there, the more lights...
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks declared October 24 to 31 as National Bat Week. Bats are kind of like snakes and things that crawl on the ground. They have a bad reputation. People know they can carry rabies and that does not help their general well being, living in a world with all the rest of us. But there is more. It is a well known fact that in ghost mythology and things that go bump in the night, bats are a form that vampires take to get around the countryside very quickly. They are black, only come out at night and hang upside down. What...

November is observed as American Diabetes Month. This is an opportunity to share information about diabetes, making people aware of what it is and why it is important to manage diabetes when diagnosed or even prevent it. What is diabetes? Simply put, it is a condition that causes the levels of glucose (blood sugar) in your blood to get too high. Over time, your organs cannot function properly due to the high levels of glucose. It just cannot keep up with the demand and then you begin to experience health problems. If diabetes is not diagnosed...

What do these two organizations have in common? Plenty. However, I must say the women’s group accomplishes more. I know, at this time of year this is not a popular thing to say, but when you’re right, you’re right. Santa’s elves work all year round preparing for one night when girls and boys all over the world get toys. This is admirable. By contrast, the Methodist women work all year round amassing articles for the Big Sandy Christmas craft sale. This year it will be December 2, at the Jerry Martin Memorial Hall and also the Museum. In cont...
