With the increase of outdoor cooking happening, a reminder about food safety seemed appropriate for this time of year. Preparing and cooking food safely helps prevent harmful bacteria from making us sick. This includes hands, utensils, platters, cutting/prep boards and tables/counters. Do not use the same equipment for cooked foods that you did for raw foods. Clean between using with raw foods before using for cooked...

My father was one of the gentlest and kind persons I have ever known. It was in his nature to help people. He avoided confrontation. Yet, he became a soldier. He worked on the family farm till he was twenty-seven and at that age was accepted into the RCMP( Royal Canadian Mounted Police). He was put in charge of the horses for his unit due to his extensive work with them on the farm. He was an excellent rider--soaring over jumps with his arms crossed. During his training, he met my mother, and...

Nothing is nobler than having a parade just for the joy of the residence of Big Sandy Medical Center. The joy it brings to our community's seniors is well worth the few minutes to walk three blocks. The length of the parade doesn't measure the value of the parade. According to research, "The longest parade in the world is the Hanover Schützenfest that takes place in Hanover every year during the Schützenfest. The parade is 7.5 miles long with more than 12,000 participants from all over the world...
Who is excited about it being time to pick the rhubarb? If you could see me, you would see me jumping up and down waiving my arms. It took a lot for me to resist the urge to pick the rhubarb when it was just a few inches tall. We all have our favorite recipes, but do you find yourself struggling to decide which recipe to make first? Maybe it is just me. If you are leaning towards a rhubarb pie but looking for a quicker recipe, a rhubarb galette may be just what you want. Galette, also called rustic pie, is French in origin. It is a single...

As a rancher, our border collies are part of the family but a tool as well. They are up for any task at hand, they don't hesitate, and they don't talk back. They show up every morning for work, and all they ask for is a good scratch behind the ears and a full belly. A good working dog can take the place of one or two hired men. A lot of blood, sweat, tears, and countless hours of training go into everyone. A working stock dog trial is a competition that brings handlers together to test their...
