    Zoe Merrill|Mar 11, 2020

Erica Chauvet DMV, Big Sandy's veterinarian, has a new clinic. This building was an old house on the Chauvet's ranch. The new clinic is located at the first tan house on the left, but Erica told me, "we built an apartment on one half and a new clinic in the other half." She is asking clients to use the deck entrance because the back half is a private entrance. "It's nice to have a bright, fresh, clean space." She now has a designated exam area, surgery space, lab, kennel area, pharmacy, office,...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Mar 11, 2020

Rachel Endecott (previous MSU Extension Beef specialist) wrote an informative article on calf vaccinations in 2017. We have always given vaccinations to young calves, but do we understand the science behind the diseases we are vaccinating for? Calf vaccination programs are most often based around the clostridial diseases. Clostridial diseases in calfhood vaccines belong to same genus as tetanus and botulism. Clostridial organisms are generally found in the animal’s body, but with ideal conditions, grow very rapidly to cause a disease state. B...

  • Glen and Anita Cook say "Pick your Battles"

    Zoe Merrill|Mar 4, 2020

Glen and Anita Cook will be married 70 years this September 23. They met in Gordon, Nebraska, of all places, in September 1949 at a small bible school. Anita told me Reverend Lund was going down there, so several Montana kids from here went. Glen said his pastor was from there, so he went there with him, but Anita interrupted him and said, "He went there because of a girl." And she chuckled. "Ya! well, she encouraged me to go." And he and Anita laughed together. They didn't fall in love right aw...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Mar 4, 2020

Two major Cutworm species, the western and the army cutworm, are serious but sporadic pests for Montana producers. Outbreaks can occur when cutworm populations are high and weather conditions are favorable for survival. Outbreaks do not necessarily occur in successive years. Larvae of either species generally are not active above ground on bright, sunny days. They can be found just below ground by scraping the soil surface lightly. Small larvae are well-camouflaged and can be difficult to see in the soil. Larval densities can be assessed by...

  • CHS Big Sky Town Meeting was well attended

    Zoe Merrill|Feb 26, 2020

CHS Big Sky met with the local patrons on Friday, February 21, at the Big Sandy City Hall. Howard Hammond, a board member and a former Big Sandy resident started the meeting with a statement. He has spent two weeks educating himself further, reviewing, and visiting with CHS personal. He wasn't necessarily proud of how we were informed, but he was comfortable with the accuracy of the financials being presented that morning. In his opinion, CHS has one of the best audit processes, and we can...

The event began at 12:30 in the afternoon, and almost every Republican candidate was there. This year they served appetizers at a buffet table instead of the usual dinner. Many people came and enjoyed the speeches, along with getting to know our Republican candidates. The State Representative and the State Senator opened with short but well-thought-out speeches. Afterward, the first of...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Feb 26, 2020

Believe it or not, the gardening season will be upon us before we know it. Below are a few gardening facts to help you prepare for the upcoming season. • Soil tests should be taken in the garden every three years. • The best time to collect a soil sample is in the spring after soil thaw. • Fall soil sampling is not recommended because Nitrogen in the soil is depleted during the fall and winter seasons. • Do not work soil when it is wet. If the soil sticks to the shovel, wait a few more days. • The number one thing that kills our plants is...

  • Influenza on the Rise

    Jessica Dooley|Feb 26, 2020

Influenza seems to be at its best this last couple of weeks, which means many of us are feeling at our worst. Influenza A and B have both been prevalent in our community for several weeks now, but we have seen a steep increase recently. Reportedly about 1/3 of the students in the grade school were out sick last week and those numbers are expected to linger. Influenza A and/or B is commonly referred to as “the flu.” It is important to note that influenza is not a typical “stomach bug” and is usually not associated with nausea, vomiting or diarrh...
