  • Getting By

    Janell Barber|Jun 13, 2018

Are you bothered by congestion or sinusitis due to season allergies? While drinking more fluids, increasing omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin C, and taking decongestants and antihistamines are some ways to cope with the symptoms, clearing your nasal passages with saline irrigation is also beneficial. Sinus rinsing removes dust, pollen, bacteria and other debris. It also loosens mucus. Nasal rinsing helps relieve sinus infections, allergies, colds and flu. Maybe you have heard of a little teapot with a long spout, called a neti pot that allows a s...

  • Public health officials issue a rabies reminder

    Jun 13, 2018

State and local public health officials are reminding Montanans to be aware of the risk for exposure to rabies as summer approaches. Encounters between humans and wild animals often increase in spring and summer months because of the time spent hiking and engaging in other outdoor activities. Rabies is a fatal disease. The rabies virus is carried in the saliva of infected warm-blooded mammals and is usually transmitted to people and other animals through a bite. Bats are a great concern in Montana because a bite may not be noticeable, and they...

  • Big Sandy Superintendent Brad Moore discusses teachers, local school education

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 6, 2018

School's out and it's a great time to celebrate the quality of teachers we have in Big Sandy giving them a high five to say thank you! Somehow over the years people in our country have lost their high regard for teachers. We have some excellent teachers in our community and they deserve to be recognized and thanked. Brad Moore said, "It's hard, almost impossible to keep good teachers in Big Sandy." Montana has the lowest starting salary in the nation at $30,036, according to the National...

  • Summer is here: The Barracuda swim team Experience

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 6, 2018

The Barracuda Swim Team started out with a splash! No pun intended. The under eight relay team made up of four boys started the race from the starting blocks with a big belly flop. One of the boys laughingly told me the splash he made blinded the other swimmers and helped him get ahead. It was a nice day and surprisingly bug free for Harlem. There were 14 teams totaling 140 swimmers Big Sandy had 25 of their 43 swimmers there for this first meet. There are six meets before Divisional which will...

  • A birds morning song is the early, early Alarm Clock

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 6, 2018

By Zoe Merrill I'm always woken up by the bird's morning songs who live in our shelter belt. They wake me up at 4:14 every morning. It's still dark out! It always starts with one song, probably the same early riser, but she is joined quickly as they sing out to each other. Some mornings I cuss at them, because I hear nothing but noise as they all sing with their own voices. Clearly not in harmony. I try to roll over and shut it out, sometimes successfully, but it can't be a deep sleep, because...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Jun 6, 2018

Tree watering rules of thumb • Water trees three times a month in addition to watering your lawn. • Deep watering to a depth of 12” inches below the soil surface is recommended. Saturate the soil around the tree within the “dripline” (the outer edges of the tree’s branches) to disperse water down toward the roots. • For evergreens, water 3’-5’ beyond the dripline on all sides of the tree. • The objective is to water slowly, dispersing the flow of water to get the water deep down to the trees roots. Watering for short periods of time onl...

  • Bike Safety for the Elementary Students

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 6, 2018

Sheriff Deputies Jeremy Echols of Big Sandy and Eric Visocan from Fort Benton were at the FE Miley School to help teach bike safety. And although your children have been taught a few safety tips it's parents that need to make sure our children are safe on their bikes this summer. It was interesting listening to the grade school kids as they repeated numerous safety tips they already knew to receive some small rewards. The first safety tip mentioned by the kids themselves was wearing bike helmets...

  • Recipients of the Power Award

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 6, 2018

The Power Award nomination process was lengthy as there were 37 nominations just from students alone. Teachers and the general public also made nominations. The final four all deserve enormous recognition. They are Adriene Gibson, Jasmine Genereux, Baily Gasvoda, and Brock Proulx. Winners of the Power Award, Brock Proulx and Baily Gasvoda,...

  • Thank You for Your Service, Robert Ray

    Submitted by Dennis Nottingham|May 30, 2018

It is spring, it is Memorial Day, it is a time to remember, it is a time to fly "Old Glory", and it is a time to give thanks. Earlier as I walked among military grave stones and monuments, I saw the names of those who had willingly sacrificed so all of us could live in freedom. I wondered who many of them were, and even recognized some I had known if only so briefly. One name is PFC Robert F. Ray etched under a Christian Cross on a gray tombstone and again as Bob Ray on a black granite monument...

    Zoe Merrill|May 30, 2018

Every year the F.E. Miley School invites the public to their Extravaganza. Programs and cookies are given at the door so you know exactly what you are going to see in each classroom. Obvious homemade chocolate chip cookies yelled at you to eat them when you walked by. They were that good! The Kindergarten class did an incredibly good job. They had Hands on Science Experiments to show and tell you about. Each table had a display of the experiments and the results. They weren't shy at all and...

    Amanda Robertson|May 30, 2018

The Big Sandy Music Department received funds from the Big Sandy Education Foundation to purchase a Yamaha Marimba for the percussion section. The marimba is an instrument made out of wood that resembles a piano. It has a row of wooden bars along the bottom where the "white" keys would be on a piano and the row above them would be the "black" keys on a piano. Instead of playing it with ten fingers, it is played with two to four mallets. Once the bar is struck with a mallet, the sound travels...
