On October 3rd, the Big Sandy CSI, the committee that organizes the Christmas Stroll, met to discuss the planning of the 2022 stroll. There was some concern in the air as the day approached, because new volunteers and helpers were needed to pull off the mammoth event. Previously, The Mountaineer published an S.O.S. (Save Our Stroll) article dealing with the potential for the decades-long town tradition may be in danger of coming to an end. The meeting drew 14 attendees, quite an increase over...

The school staff in Big Sandy featured a lot of new faces for the 2022 school year. One new face is actually returning to us after several years away. Jessie Jaramillo, who is teaching art at the high school this year, taught in Big Sandy from 2016 to 2018. She moved back to Helena, where her family lives, and tried to land a teaching job in their school districts. She has been substitute teaching for the last few years, before returning to our little community. Jessie is very close with her...
The article below is a portion of an article written by Peter Kolb (MSU Extension Forester). The article is available in full at the Chouteau County Extension office or on the website. The article explains the natural phenomenon of fall needle drop, insect management, and proper watering techniques for pine and spruce trees. Every fall a lot of concern arises when conifers such as pines, spruces and firs start to drop their older needle cohorts in preparation for winter. This is essentially an energy conservation mechanism for surviving the...

Big Sandy's Chili Feed/Homecoming took place last Friday, September 30th, though Big Sandy Schools began a week early with their traditional Spirit Week activities. Spirit Week typically includes various days for the students to wear costumes or themed outfits to school. At FE Miley Elementary School, this year saw the return of a newer tradition: the building of class floats for the parade across town. This is the second year of float building, and it is quickly becoming a favorite amongst the...

Lawn and Garden advice for October and November Managing horticultural landscapes and house plants in November is important for healthy production during the growing season. Below are a few recommendations for Chouteau County gardeners. • Apply protective mulches to perennial beds. • Use a humidifier to maintain humidity for houseplants. • Prune out dead limbs of woody ornamentals. • Do not fertilize or transplant anything after Columbus Day. • Continue to water landscape plantings (trees, shrubs, and perennials) until the soil freezes....

The Big Sandy division of Santa's Helpers is sending out an S.O.S. this year: Save Our Stroll. The Big Sandy Volunteer EMTs are riding in style nowadays. After months of delays, the new ambulance is finally in use. The fire department originally submitted a grant application in June of 2020 to the Montana Department of Transportation, which operates a grant program that pays for up to 90% of the cost of a new ambulance. The price of a new ambulance at the time was $220,000. The grant was awarded later that fall, but delays due to supply chain issues pushed back manufacturing and kept the...

Harvest Fest 2022 was a success! We were blessed with perfect temperatures and a smoke-free sky after Friday's rain. The event was well attended and certainly enjoyed by all who came to enjoy the day. With the help of the Big Sandy Baracuda Swim Team, the kids in attendance tested their skills at games like ring toss, pop-can fishing, football throw, and balloon darts, among others. If they weren't partaking in a game, they were getting their face painted, playing on the bounce house, or...
Lentil Yield and Nitrogen Fixation Response to Inoculant and Fertilizer Lentil production has grown dramatically in the northern Great Plains over the past 20 years. In Montana and North Dakota, planted acreage of lentil has increased from 67,000 in 2000 to 585,000 in 2022 (USDA-NASS, 2022. Lentil is capable of biological nitrogen (N) fixation, a process in which rhizobia bacteria in legume root nodules convert N gas into N that is available for plant uptake. This makes lentil an attractive option for producers wanting to decrease fertilizer N...

On Sunday, September 25th, Big Sandy Church of God held its 11th Annual Brisket Cook-Off. This year's event featured 14 cooks, including 2 Big Sandy High School students. The event was well attended, with around 175 people coming out to eat lunch and vote on the people's choice. There was also a pie baking contest as a part of the cook-off. Cooks had the opportunity to win in both the Judge's and People's Choice categories. The strongest showing of the day was Chase Hoffman, who has competed in...
I have struggled with this for a year now, hoping I would not have to increase the cost of advertisements. However, when Havre Daily’s newspaper print broke down, and I had to have Helena print the paper, the price of printing rose four times what it was costing me at Havre. After Havre had their printers fixed, their costs increased. I cannot meet my expenses without raising the cost of my advertisements. I haven’t raised the cost of the advertisements for four years. I hope everyone will continue to support the Mountaineer as I need to mak...

The organizational meeting of the Pioneer Parent Organization met at the Big Sandy Library. The purpose is to find ways to support the teachers of Big Sandy. Both teachers and parents will belong to the organization so they can communicate needs and ideas. Every idea is doable. For example, suppose you want to offer to help do little things. In that case, you can make copies, laminate items, cut out items, hand out backpack buddies, help at the book fair, bake goodies for the teacher's lounge,...
Ron Wiens is still the acting CEO; however, the Medical Center is still looking for a permanent CEO. Anyone interested in the position should contact the Medical Center to require how to apply. I attended the monthly board meeting of the Board of Directors for BSMC. There were 29 people in attendance, all associated with the medical center except myself. I want to express that this will not be meeting minutes, primarily because by the time it gets to print, many agenda items will have changed. Sarah Schlepp reported that currently, the Medical...

During the county fair, I set out to write articles highlighting incoming seniors with long histories of involvement in FFA and 4H competition. Both of the students I interview, Lance Rutledge and Jaycee Worrall, did well in the competitions this year and were interesting to interview. Though I originally planned to focus on seniors, I was repeatedly encouraged to write about Alex Worrall as well. Alex is in the 9th grade and has just switched to FFA after 8 years in 4H. "I showed a pig and a...

It was a scorching day, over 100 degrees, with a strong wind of plus 20 miles an hour. Red flags warning were out when the fire alarm went off in Big Sandy. It was the kind of day that everyone needed to respond. The rumor was that it was arson because the fire was so sporadic. However, it was started by a contractor working on a cabin formerly owned by Keith Edwards and now owned by a relative. It was purely unintentional. He couldn't stop it and drove immediately to a place where there was...

"It's been awesome," explained Sydnie Stellpflug, the new Second Grade teacher, when I asked her about her experience at F.E. Miley Elementary School. "As a first year teacher, I was super nervous. I feel like I have every question in the world. But everyone's been super helpful. They jump right in and answer. They're checking on me throughout the day. 'Hey, is everything okay?' 'Do you need anything?'" Sydney was born and raised on a ranch in Wyoming. She graduated from the University of...

It's great to have it back! Everyone has missed the Medical Guild rummage sale. Twenty-nine people came to the luncheon, and ten of those were new younger people. Lisa Sipler was extremely happy to see new younger people caring about the medical center. It is good when we get involved and give back to our community. These new volunteers have already started working! They also have a new vice president--Laci Labuda. And Michele Robertson volunteered to be responsible for the PR and...
