  • Thanksgiving is Here

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 27, 2019

We all have our traditional Thanksgiving meal, and usually our regular thanksgiving prayer. We thank God for our family, for the food on our table, and pray for our family, which isn't with us. An attitude of gratitude is minimized to one meal. I interviewed more members of our community about what was their favorite things. We often take for granted what we are indeed thankful for without thinking about what blesses we have in our lives or give it a second thought. Usually, everyone had to...

  • Big Sandy CSI Stroll Updates; Check out the vendors at the bazar

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 27, 2019

It’s Thanksgiving, and we’re celebrating with food. The Christmas Stroll Saturday morning is nothing without it food vendors. Paula Amsbaugh will have a table to sell her Mimi’s Mustard and Dip. Paula said, “I got the recipe from a friend years ago,” but she has “tweaked” it. She’s been making the mustard for about 20 years, but it was only a couple of years ago she started to try and sell it. It took her over a year to get all the paperwork completed. It was difficult to get started because she didn’t know where to start. Although the reci...

  • Breaking traditon, spend Thanksgiving in Paris

    Judy Yirsa|Nov 27, 2019

Last year my husband and I were in the early stages of planning a family vacation for the following summer when we came across shockingly low-priced flights from Great Falls to Paris. The only catch was that the departure was on Thanksgiving Day. Being that the trip was within two months, we jumped at the opportunity and booked right away. Although we were personally battling colds, Chris and I could not help but notice how effortlessly we could get around with both our girls, then ages 3 and...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Nov 27, 2019

I found an interesting article from Canada on stretching hay supply with straw. The article is located at https://www.canadiancattlemen.ca/2017/11/06/stretching-your-cattles-hay-supply-with-straw/. I asked Dr. Megan Van Emon (MSU Assistant Professor, Extension Beef Cattle Specialist) to review the article to see if it is a good fit for Chouteau County producers. I have included Megan’s comments. Travis Peardon, the regional livestock specialist in Outlook, Saskatchewan says straw has its limitations when used in beef cattle diets. Straw does n...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Nov 27, 2019

In 1929, Calvin Coolidge traveled to the Black Hills in North Dakota for a vacation. While there, he was photographed many times dressed in cowboy attire. The one catch being that it isn’t actually cowboy attire. It’s a very fancy, almost silly version of it. At the time, the press mocked the president mercilessly. He responded that it was ok for them to laugh, but that he was living out a childhood dream. Looking at the pictures, there is no way anyone would think that the president was a real cowboy. He tried to dress the part, but in rea...

If so, here are some conversation starter questions for all age—do not forget to involve the kids. • If you could have named yourself, what name would you have picked? • What do you think is the hardest thing about being a kid? • If you could eat only one food on this table for an entire year, which one would it be? • If you were an animal, what would you be? • Would you rather not shower for...

  • "A Seussified Christmas Carol"- Opening Night

    Kalee Rose|Nov 27, 2019

November 22nd and 23rd, the high school hosted its annual play. The auditorium was absolutely packed with friends and familiar faces, along with folks I've never met. It turned out to be quite the production! Hard work from everyone and great acting made this modern twist of " The Christmas Carol" an absolute gem. I don't know if I have ever appreciated theater as much as I did Friday and Saturday night. This play takes place during Christmas, in a Suessified setting. The four young narrators...

  • Her Love of Horses

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 27, 2019

Lily Winderl likes to paint. Horses are her forte. She loves drawing horses. "I start most of my pieces with a basic coat, a then I add a vibrant color. I do a lot of bright colors. I've been working with pastels for some time." But she will also tell you she paints with vibrant colors when she's happy. It's joy she is trying to express. She'll paint with dark colors or create more bland paintings if her day isn't going well. "Art is important because it's a release from everyday life. It's an...

  • As season winds down, JH hoops eyeing tourney

    Sean Janssen|Nov 27, 2019

Though their regular season schedule concluded Saturday with a jamboree in Hays, Big Sandy junior high basketballers still have some hoop to play after the Thanksgiving holiday. With a district tournament slated for next week, the Pioneers have a chance to wrap up 2019 on a good note after some frustrating stretches without the availability of key players. Those struggles were evident Monday, Nov. 18, when Big Sandy welcomed Chester-Joplin-Inverness to their gym for a previously-postponed pair of tilts. The Pioneer girls’ squad dropped a 3...

  • Cline and Gregory voted all Conference

    Sean Janssen|Nov 27, 2019

Big Sandy volleyball players were recognized early last week for their accomplishments at the end of a season that concluded with achievement of an important team goal. A team banquet permitted the Lady Pioneers to reflect on a fall that had its ups and downs but capped with a remarkable upset-filled run to the divisional tournament. In a players' vote, senior Amanda Cline earned the award for "scrappiest" player. "It's probably about the biggest deal because that's the one the girls really...

  • River River North

    Beverly Terry|Nov 27, 2019

The past couple of weeks have brought many hunters and fishermen down to the ferry. Some hunters I see every year, and they have nicknamed me the "River Queen." It makes me smile and helps me remember who I am talking to. This year I haven't seen many animals riding in the back of trucks. However, I did see an impressive five-point atypical mule deer. Horns were straight on one side and laying over massive thickness on the other side. It was an impressive rack! I had another encounter with a...
