It started with a children's parade with pulled wagons that each class decorated. They even called me from the school to make sure I would see them and take a picture. The children walked from F.E. Miley School to the high school through the downtown area. They even threw candy! After they got to the football field, those who wanted to participate in the Punt, Pass, and Kick Contest. I love the Punt, Pass, and Kick contest. All those who want to be football players dream about being one. All...

October is upon us and it has brought a murder to the Big Sandy Library! A killer is on the loose, and the game is afoot, and by game, I mean Clue. The Library will be running a game of Clue for the community throughout the month of October. Though the full story has yet to be revealed, the cast of characters in our local game won't include Professor Plum, Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, or any of the others from the classic game. Instead, the game will be stocked with a cast of local suspects. A...

While reading earlier this month, I came across a bit of information that prompted a question I passed around to friends and coworkers. It was interesting enough that I thought I would share it with the Mountaineer readers. There are some other bits and pieces of information added to make it interesting. Let me know if this bit of trivia is interesting and if you would like to see more of this in future issues. “Who is the wealthiest athlete of all time?” Most people guess Michael Jordan or Tig...
Managing horticultural landscapes and house plants in November is important for healthy production during the growing season. Below are a few recommendations for Chouteau County gardeners. • Apply protective mulches to perennial beds. • Use a humidifier to maintain humidity for houseplants. • Prune out dead limbs of woody ornamentals. • Do not fertilize or transplant anything after Columbus Day. • Continue to water landscape plantings (trees, shrubs, and perennials) until the soil freezes. • Apply winter mulch to strawberry beds as soon as the...
The Big Sandy School board held a special meeting to discuss two items during a Covid-19 quarantine. There was one kindergartener who tested positive for Covid. This reporter does not know if it was the Delta strain or not. The result of that, and because the children in the kindergartener class do not maintain social distancing, meant the county health nurse recommended that all kindergarten classes stay home for one week. Melanie Schwarzbach representing the teacher the Memorandum of Understanding-COVID leave document requesting funds become...
The Big Sandy Chili Feed has always been filled with fun memories of firetruck rides, homecoming, and a chance to see your friends and neighbors. I don’t think I have missed one in almost forty years. However, this year’s Chili Feed has a different meaning to me than years past. This year when I go, it will not only be the memories in my mind, but a new purpose to also say thanks! I was involved in an accident in July that nearly amputated my arm. The Big Sandy Ambulance crew and the ER saved my life and my arm. My family and I wanted to giv...

The first-ever Harvest Festival took place on Saturday, September 25, in front of the Catholic Church and it was a huge success! Everyone was invited to join in the celebration of harvest, community, and fellowship. This event replaced the traditional Harvest Dinner usually hosted in the fall by the Parish Council of Women (PCW). For over 40 years the ladies hosted a turkey dinner with all the fixings, using the proceeds to provide scholarships, purchase needed items for the church, and make...

Some alumni felt that 2025 was a bit too far to see fellow classmates. Way back in March of this year a plan was hatched by Sharon Broesder Casey (class of 64) for a gathering on Chili Feed weekend. They are still planning to attend the Chili Feed, Friday, October 8th. On Saturday, October 9th the Senior Center will open at 9 a.m. for friends and family to gather, visit and reminisce the day away. Cow Patti’s food truck will NOT be available as once planned. This is not and exclusive Sixties party. Come visit. 50’s, and 70’s come on down and s...
Winter Squash – Quick and Easy Prep is Possible Spaghetti, pumpkin, acorn, butternut, hubbard, buttercup are all delicious and nutritious squash varieties to include in fall and winter meals. Do you enjoy eating them but put off fixing them for a meal because of the dreaded preparation? Do you have a difficult time peeling and cutting them raw? The solution is either roasting in the oven or, my personal preference, pressure cooking. Whether you have a stove top or an electric pressure cooker, you will get the same great results. The d...
COVID has been one of the most divisive subjects in our community. It has divided close friends and family members. COVID, the use of masks and vaccines, has separated our community into two camps. That is why I struggled to tell the story again; however, there is information that we need to consider as a community family before we continue to go forward with our health. As of Monday, September 27, 20 active cases in Chouteau County have been reported. We also know there are some people with COVID-related symptoms that were not diagnosed....

Monica Otto Winderl has been introducing Big Sandy students to the fine arts for three years, which has rounded out her 22 year career as an art teacher. Though she isn't from Big Sandy, Monica spent her growing up years visiting family in the area. Her father is first cousins with Ron Otto. An accomplished artist, her work has been on display in galleries around the state, including Fort Benton. Monica didn't set out to go into either art or teaching as a career. She explains: "I fell into it....

According to Cheer Coach Heather Dilworth "The future of Pioneer cheerleaders is really bright." The 2021 Cheer Camp held Friday, September 24th, and sponsored by the Big Sandy Cheerleaders was a great success and was far beyond their expectations. They had 35 sign up, and 30 of those showed up, including three young men. Big Sandy has three cheerleaders this year Teagan Cochran, Tavie Wortman, and Haley Schwenke. The three of them decorated T-shirts for the prospective cheerleaders, and then...
Fall Management of Cheatgrass in Fallow Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), also commonly called downy brome, is a problematic weed in winter wheat and in rangeland throughout Montana. Cheatgrass typically germinates in the autumn, overwinters, and produces seed by mid-summer. The cheatgrass life cycle is similar to winter wheat which makes it a problematic weed in winter wheat fields. Cheatgrass is an abundant seed producer. Seed is only viable for one to two years in the seedbank. Cheatgrass typically germinates from late August to early October...

Although September is almost behind us, I could not miss my opportunity to put in my annual plug for this month being National Sewing Month. This past year brought new sewing enthusiasts into the world of sewing as well as those who used to sew back. Motivations of why people sew vary from relieving stress to a way of saving money, although many would say it is an expensive hobby. If you have not caught the sewing bug yet but have been thinking about it, here is some information to get you started. If you are worried about the cost of sewing,...
Kandi Marino needs a kidney transplant. They need $10,000 down before they even put her on the list., and she’ll need more after the surgery. Kandi has lived in Big Sandy for 36 years, and she calls it her hometown. She’s seen how people treat each other. “We are family here. That’s how people act. I’ve seen it for 36 years. My kids told me it was time I allowed the family to help support me.” She knows this community is all about caring, but her son said she wouldn’t just have a benefit. She wanted to serve the community. “I get all embarrasse...

If you're looking for delicious barbecue in the area, you can't go wrong visiting The Public House in Fort Benton. The Public House offers a range of smoked meat options, prepared by their resident barbecue chef, Alex Salazar. Alex has been cooking at The Wake Cup (and more recently at its sister restaurant, The Public House), but he has been smoking food most of his life. I met Alex when he competed in the Big Sandy Church of God Brisket Cook-Off 2 years ago. Then, he was just beginning to...

After 9 years in the town of Big Sandy, my family and I took a major step toward becoming permanent Big Sandy residents by purchasing a house of our own. We feel particularly blessed to have bought the Brumwell's house as they retired and moved closer to their kids. Not only have we bought a neat home, but we are now living in a piece of Big Sandy history. The newly dubbed "Sietsema House" bears all sorts of signs that it is over a century old, from the ornate "old west hinges and moldings, to...
The following article and study were completed by Ben Hauptman, MSU Extension Granite County. In summer 2020 the active ingredient indaziflam (RejuvraTM) was approved by the Environmental Protection Agency for use on rangelands, CRP, and natural areas. Indaziflam’s mode of action inhibits cellulose biosynthesis in seedlings, making it an effective pre-emergent herbicide for annuals such as cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), a non-native winter annual grass. Cheatgrass is the most widespread invasive plant in the western U.S., and it is p...

A couple of months ago, I wrote an article about my upcoming participation in the Great Cycle Challenge. I am about a week away from finishing my fourth year of riding in the largest cycling event in the United States to raise money for fighting kids' cancer. I committed to raising $500 and riding 200 miles during the month of September. So far, I am about halfway through my miles and have nearly reached my goal for fundraising. Though I have almost cleared my goal, that doesn't need to be the...
The Big Sandy Medical Guild has postponed the Rummage Sale and Pie Social, due to rising concerns of increased COVID-19 cases, but the fundraising efforts will continue through the sale of raffle tickets. Proceeds will be earmarked for much-needed upgrades to the kitchen at the Big Sandy Medical Center (BSMC). Guild members decided to “err on the side of caution,” according to Lisa Sipler, “because the pandemic lockdown process was very difficult for our residents.” By postponing the popular community event, “we will reduce the risk of exposu...
All city council members were present at the last city council meeting except for Rich Jesperson, who had a tree limb removal accident. He was home from the hospital and healing from a concussion. All three of the city employees were present, including Tim Labuda, Larry Geyer, and Wendy Kleinsasser, the city clerk. Also present at the meeting, Sherriff’s Deputy, Dennis Hale, who had no official report but was asked about the high-speed car chase that went through Big Sandy around 2:30 AM. Susan Brurud from Bear Paw Development and Luke L...

In lieu of the traditional Harvest Dinner, this year the ladies of the PCW at St. Margaret Mary's have decided to host a Harvest Festival instead. The Harvest Dinner has been hosted by the gals for over 40 years and has been the main fundraiser for the group. The funds raised help to provide scholarships to high school seniors, as well as to purchase necessary items for the Church and to provide other donations around the community. This year's event will be a joint fundraising effort with the...
