State and local public health officials are reminding Montanans to take steps to avoid mosquito bites and prevent infection with West Nile Virus (WNV). In Montana, WNV season usually begins in July and ends in October, as this is when the mosquitoes that transmit WNV emerge. The best way to prevent mosquito-borne diseases, is to protect yourself from mosquito bites. While mosquitoes found in Montana are unable to transmit diseases like Zika virus, they do spread WNV. The virus can also infect horses and birds, with birds serving as the source o...

Recently as you are all mostly aware there have been two car thefts in the town of Big Sandy. They are not related. The one pickup was discovered and returned to his owner. They have a couple of suspects, but other than that because it is on an ongoing investigation Chouteau County Sheriff's Deputy Jeremy Echols will not comment. The pickup that was stolen was reported missing an hour or two from when it was stolen. The razor wasn't reported missing up to 12 hours after they had last seen it....

June. Mid-afternoon. It's a balmy 83 degrees and the concession stand is prepping for the crowds. The outfield is littered with Tee-ballers and grass clippings. The season is about to begin. With little, to no money in a non-existent bank account, the group must rally to re-organize a sport deemed America's "Nation...

This year's theme at the Christ Lutheran Church Vacation Bible School was "Who is my Neighbor." The story of the good Samaritan can be found in Luke 10:25-37 The Parable of the Good Samaritan: "On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" "What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" He answered, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with...

Schools out, but there are things to do this summer. The pool is open every day and the Big Sandy Library has a reading program. There are t-ball games to watch, O-Mok-See on the weekends. When the "I'm bored" comes it doesn't hurt to have a long list of things to do. It doesn't hurt adults to have a list either. Summer is a good time, to put on your list, relax and do some fun things with the kids. Create pieces of art. Research easy science experiments. Try new fun food. Find and go walking...

Human rabies deaths in the United States are rare, according to the Centers for Disease Control and...

The Big Sandy Pool has opened for the season. It opened Saturday, June 1 for open swim. The weather was great for opening weekend. The kiddie pool will hopefully be ready this weekend. Tim LaBuda and Larry Geyer worked hard getting the pool up and running in time for the schools to use it the last two weeks of school. The pool got 2 new heaters this year. The old one finally gave out...

They couldn't remember how many years they have been making pancakes, "probably 20"! Linda Ophus, the President of the...

One of the hardest things to think about having to do is making the decision of what to do when a loved one has a terminal condition. Or perhaps you have been in the position of having made the decision in the past. You know the reality of how difficult the decision is to make but also wonder if it was the right decision and was it was your loved one would have wanted. Under the Montana Rights of the Terminally Ill Act, Montanans have the right to complete a declaration, another name for advanced directives or living will. This allows an indivi...

Memorial Day Weekend will also be a celebration for the Virgelle Mercantile as it will be 40 years since he first opened the doors. The town and the Mercantile were "founded in 1912 by Virgil and Ella Blankenbaker along the tracks of the Great Northern Railroad near Coal Banks Landing on the Upper...
