The Medical Guild Auxiliary was established in 1965. The new officers this year are President, Lisa Sipler, Joleen Williams is the Vice-President, Reggie Jappe is the Treasurer and Lisa Genereux is the Secretary. They don’t really have a membership anymore because they changed the by-laws so whoever comes is considered a member. Sipler and Jappe were so encouraged by a few senior members of our community, Edna Bitz, Barb Dixon, Roberta Whetham and Coralee Welty when they attended the luncheon to help plan the Rummage Sale. They still care a...

The fastest growing segment of the population in the United States are older adults. This group is uniquely vulnerable to financial scams. Con artists find them as attractive prey because older adults are thought to have a “nest egg,” have excellent credit, won’t say “no” because they were raised to be polite and trusting, are less likely to report the fraud for fear of appearing to have a weakened mental capacity because they were taken advantage or they do not know how to report it. Older adults need to be aware and prepared to protect themse...

Recently, I watched a Cooper’s hawk take off from a rural, gravel road, clutching a dead meadowlark in its talons. An adult Cooper’s hawk might weigh 1 pound. An adult meadowlark probably tips the scale at 3 ounces. To compare that to a human, a 200-pound person would have to lift almost 40 pounds, then run away. Extra points if you can fly. Perhaps you are physically fit. Maybe you are the strongest at the gym, ran a marathon recently or reupped for advanced yoga classes. Isn’t it strange we do these activities to keep up our daily stren...

September is National Sewing Month!! It started in 1982 in recognition of the importance of home sewing to our Nation. Not that we should need it but anytime an excuse comes up to sew, I take it. However, more and more things seem to pile up and crowd out any extra time to do the things we enjoy. If you enjoy sewing or have been wanting to learn how to sew, make it happen in September as part of National Sewing Month. Even better—how about making something without sewing a single stitch? There are many blogs and videos that show you how to make...

Every teacher has their challenges starting a new year, but Jill Barta isn't like most single grade teachers. Jill said, "I'm still learning everyone's name, still getting to know exactly what everyone needs are so I can meet their needs and making sure I am doing my job. Once I get to know everyone's learning abilities, what they can do, what they can't do." That's when...

Last fall I turned in an essay and an application for the 2018 Youth Tour to D.C. Two of my friends went on the tour a few years back and I figured I would give it a shot, but when I submitted my essay and application, I had no clue that I was going to get the trip of a lifetime. Hill County Electric Cooperative was gracious enough to send me on an all-expense paid trip to our nation's capital; Washington D.C. June 7th: I hopped onto a plane with 42 strangers and headed across the United...
