Jessica Roth was reading Christmas books to our most treasured members of our community. It was a relaxing moment. Muriel Silvan was listening, sitting in the TV room at the medical center, she looked so much like her mother Stella Lund, I smiled because I hadn't thought of Stella for years. She wanted to talk about her memories of sitting by a Christmas tree watching the candles burn. I could picture her there with Elmer and Stella Lund. They'd sit by the tree watching the flames dance until th...

Facing this first Christmas without Elaine's design for the stroll, meant just one thing for Tracy, find every button Elaine ever designed, which was 17 years. It took one month to find...

While Robin Pearson was driving to the Bear Paw Coffee Shop and Deli he was thanking the Lord for giving him the idea to find volunteers to work at the Coffee Shop and Deli, allowing it to be open for the Christmas Stroll. Kind of like farmers finishing the combining when a neighbor needs help. Community supporting community. Neighbors helping neighbors. Robin said there were three key elements that he knew he would need in order to make a volunteer crew work. First Steve and Cherie Stiles...
I have just finished one of the most delightful Big Sandy books I have ever read. I liked it because it takes place in the 1940’s and it is plotted between Havre and Big Sandy. As the story opens Loretta Johnson is born in 1947. Her family dreamed of farming, As a matter of fact the book is entitled, “Farm Stories, a Fading dream”. If you love a ration of pictures to go with the stories, this is the book for you as each page is overloaded with pics. I have to laugh when I see those pictures as I could have been in some of them. Brambles, The U...

In this land of plenty called the Golden Triangle there is nothing worse than going to bed with an empty belly and yet that happens. However, it does not happen as much as it used to with the advent of the Big Sandy Food Bank which used to be run out of the Methodist Church basement and now is run at the Big Sandy Church of God. According to Pastor Eric Sietsema, there are about fifteen families that have real needs for food and that translates into around 70 people in our community that would not make it through the month without help from...

Last week on Thanksgiving day it was in the sixties in many parts of Montana. Strange to say the least because for some time now it has been cold with even snow on the ground when Thanksgiving rolls around. It is the wind, those wonderful Chinook winds that cause the temperatures to go up. Just before Thanksgiving early one morning I was awake and heard the winds start up and noticed that the house was getting very warm. I saw that around 5am the temperature outside was almost 50 and the winds had died down. I was sad because I had hoped to...
Using Straw in Cattle Rations- Frequently asked Questions How much straw can I put in my cow winter ration? It is important to know that straw is a low energy, and low protein feed. It is not as digestible as hay or green feed. Generally, a cow can consume 1.25% of her body weight in straw dry matter (DM). Therefore, a 1400 lb cow could consume 17.5 lbs on a DM basis, or 19.9 lbs on an ‘as-fed’ basis if the straw was 90% DM (17.5/0.9 = 19.9 lbs, this calculation is to adjust for the moisture content of the straw). Near the end of ges...
The Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) and local public agencies are offering food safety tips to help Montanans stay healthy this holiday season. “As we plan for visitors and prepare for festivities, food safety can be the last thing we think about,” said Ed Evanson of the DPHHS Food and Consumer Safety Section. “Being safe while preparing food is easier than people think. Keeping these guidelines in mind will help ensure that you and your family can have a happy and healthy Turkey Day.” Safe Storage • Make sure there is am...
Happy Christmas from the Big Sandy Cultural and Curiosity Center. We had very successful summer arts workshops thanks to Roberta Edwards, Jessica Jaramillo, Dolly Pursley, Carol Smith, Donna Jenkins and Kelly Owen. Soon with funding we’ll be able to install a heating system in the former S&J grocery store so we can finish renovations and operate year round. For years, Big Sandy folks wanted to have a boys and girls club, and with our plans for an after-school program we’ll have our version complete with a research library, more workshops and...
