Last week I wrote about Vanessa and Liana Janssen's recent visit to Japan. In actuality, the Janssen family consists of three children in total. It simply was not feasible for the entire family to make the trip east, as airfare to Japan was quite costly. So the head of the family and Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Sean Janssen, researched alternate destinations with cheap flights for a trip with his two young sons, Cameron, age six, and Holden, age 4. He found a terrific deal from Seattle to...

This last fall, local Vanessa Janssen traveled with her daughter Liana to Japan. They were joined by Vanessa's parents, sister, and her sister's boyfriend. The reason for their family reunion? To visit their dear family friend, whom Vanessa warmly referred to as her sister, who recently relocated from Seattle to Japan. Welcome to another chapter in my recounting of the tales of Old Big Sandy (which means "old" by the standards of my lifetime, mostly the 1960s and early 1970s). This column is not meant to be a telling of Cliff Gullickson's life story; it is instead a summation of my observations about the man as I knew him during the time that we were both part of Big Sandy. People might not have thought about it at the time, but a small community is made up of people who play varying roles in the lives of...

Celebrating birthdays is always fun, but gathering from far and wide to celebratIng a wonderful auntie's 97th birthday is extra special! This is a great time to start pie plans for the fall and winter. The annual pie sale, during the hospital guild's rummage sale, is the first week in October. To keep the taste of summer, freeze or can fresh ripe fruit now, and turn it into a pie later! Or make the filling and freeze it, or make the pie and freeze it, cooked or not. I found a wonderful soggy crust remedy in Rose Levy Beranbaum's The Pie and Pastry Bible. This could be adapted for any fruit that is "too juicy". After adding the...
