One of Grandma Moses paintings is titled, "It snows, oh it snows". Those were the operative words around here last week when snow started falling Monday afternoon and by Monday night the power was off from Havre to Malta, blizzard like winds blew huge branches and sometimes whole trees to the ground and as Tuesday morning dawned, there were downed power lines all over parts of Chouteau, Hill, Blaine and Phillips County. Observers think that Big Sandy got around 24 inches of snow and many places...

This week is Fire Prevention Week. It is a week of celebration all around the United States. And, although we don't celebrate it as such in the Big Sandy area, we do celebrate Chili Feed Night which is a large fund raiser for the Big Sandy Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance. But it is more than that. It is a time that Big Sandy residents can honor those who volunteer and keep us safe in so many ways. The other day I was at the Big Sandy Medical Center and the Mercy Flight was just leaving...

One of "The Mountaineer" readers, Elaine Thompson, said that she had kept a story from "The Mountaineer" about whether the mountain range to the south of us should be called the Bear Paw Mountains or the Bears Paw Mountains. She had lost the story and wondered if it could be reprinted. So, here goes. First let's look at it through the eyes of journalists. Several years ago "The Tribune" in Great Falls did a survey and ran a story saying that the range should be called the Bear Paw Mountains...

One of the puzzling things about living in a state that has seven Indian Reservations in it is what should people be called who live on those reservations? Some suggest calling them Native Americans. Others say that First Nations People sounds better and many agree that the name Indian should probably not be used. Many of the Blackfeet Nation do not feel that way at all. They say that when Christopher Columbus discovered what is now the United States and thought it was India so he named the...

Too often we hear about the negative aspects of how public education has changed all the way from the federal level down to the one room school house. There is no debate that public education has changed. Some say those changes are not positive and feel we should go back to educating students like we did in the 50’s or the 80’s or at the turn of the century depending on what time frame you grew up in. Every change in public education can be debated on whether those changes are positive or negative and will continue to be debated from the fed...

The Big Sandy Booster Club got a huge boost with a large number of Pioneers wanting to help out with Booster activities. The Booster Club rolls went from well under ten to over twenty and gains are being made even yet. The goals of the Booster Club are simple according to President Jeri Roth. They are to help students get excited about things to do in school whether they are athletic or academic. If there are places for science students to go to that are costly, Booster Club can help with those...
There is a new wave of Republicanism sweeping across Chouteau County. Gone are the Lincoln Day dinners traditionally held in Fort Benton. Instead the Republicans decided to have fun and move their main event for the year to Loma (half way between Fort Benton and Big Sandy), have it catered by Ma’s Café known for her Mexican treats and turn it into a Fall Festival of treats just to have fun and meet some new candidates for the United States Senate. According to Rick Jespersen the Community Hall in Loma is middle ground. It decorated easily an...
The regular Big Sandy City Council Meeting was held on September 7, 2017. After the welcome, the pledge was recited and minutes were approved from the last meeting. There was one visitor, no public comment and no sheriff’s report. The new water line project was discussed with Bear Paw Development. The Council is reviewing ways to bill people for water use more efficiently. In the process to change billing systems Big Sandy has held out for a long time but a new system would be more productive. The Council is still working on with Rural D...

There is nothing more important in any community than the education of its young people. And, it is also true that there is nothing more important to any community then getting the very best teachers available in any year. Name: Sarah Pugh What position are you teaching at what school? If not where have you...
#1 Buddy Day- As a new teacher here, I was indoctrinated into this tradition through trial by fire as I was on recess duty that day. There I was on the playground with 60 or so elementary kids, just barely mastering all their names, add to that 60 or so Junior High/High School kids who I had no clue about. I feared it would be chaos, but that didn’t happen. What did happen was pure magic, and it happens every year during Buddy Day. The Big Buddies and Little Buddies have so much fun having lunch and playing at recess together that I would be ha...

We all look forward to the opportunity to clean out our closets for a good cause, pick up a few odds and ends at a good price, and indulge in a half dozen or so slices of pie at the pie counter. My first year in Big Sandy, my daughter and I ate 18 slices of pie at the pie counter and have looked forward to the event every year since. Though in the years that have followed, I’ve discovered another, b...
