In this land of plenty called the Golden Triangle there is nothing worse than going to bed with an empty belly and yet that happens. However, it does not happen as much as it used to with the advent of the Big Sandy Food Bank which used to be run out of the Methodist Church basement and now is run at the Big Sandy Church of God. According to Pastor Eric Sietsema, there are about fifteen families that have real needs for food and that translates into around 70 people in our community that would not make it through the month without help from...

Last week on Thanksgiving day it was in the sixties in many parts of Montana. Strange to say the least because for some time now it has been cold with even snow on the ground when Thanksgiving rolls around. It is the wind, those wonderful Chinook winds that cause the temperatures to go up. Just before Thanksgiving early one morning I was awake and heard the winds start up and noticed that the house was getting very warm. I saw that around 5am the temperature outside was almost 50 and the winds had died down. I was sad because I had hoped to...
Using Straw in Cattle Rations- Frequently asked Questions How much straw can I put in my cow winter ration? It is important to know that straw is a low energy, and low protein feed. It is not as digestible as hay or green feed. Generally, a cow can consume 1.25% of her body weight in straw dry matter (DM). Therefore, a 1400 lb cow could consume 17.5 lbs on a DM basis, or 19.9 lbs on an ‘as-fed’ basis if the straw was 90% DM (17.5/0.9 = 19.9 lbs, this calculation is to adjust for the moisture content of the straw). Near the end of ges...

We had very successful summer arts workshops thanks to Roberta Edwards, Jessica Jaramillo, Dolly Pursley, Carol Smith, Donna Jenkins and Kelly Owen. Soon with funding we’ll be able to install a heating system in the former S&J grocery store so we can finish renovations and operate year round. For years, Big Sandy folks wanted to have a boys and girls club, and with our plans for an after-school program we’ll have our version complete with a research library, more workshops and...

Midge Edwards said that her family lived for a long time in west central Minnesota. She was a Geyer and her father passed away when she was very young so her mother, who knew that there were relatives in the Big Sandy area, decided to move to Montana. A tornado tore through their home place in Minnesota so they moved to the Big Sandy area in 1946. Midge was in high school and had her mother, a brother and three sisters living with her. Before they knew it they were living with a bachelor uncle...

This year the Big Sandy Chamber of Commerce decided that instead of auctioning off craft items, they would honor Elaine Courtnage by auctioning off some things that meant a great deal to her. The family of Elaine has started a scholarship fund at the Big Sandy High School in Elaine's honor. The scholarship is to help those going into the arts and nursing. Marlys Edmonds, speaking for the Chamber of Commerce, said that all funds from the donated items will go toward that scholarship fund. Items...

Christmas Tree Care There are many “tips” to caring for a Christmas tree that propose to make it last longer or stay greener. In truth, all a tree really needs to maintain freshness is adequate water. This is easily done by using the proper tree stand and keeping the water level in the stand above the base of the tree. The following tips will help to maintain the freshness and aroma of a live Christmas tree this holiday season: • Use a tree stand that holds enough water for the size of the tree. The rule of thumb is one quart of water per o...

Recent grizzly bear attacks involving hunters reinforces the importance of being bear aware in Montana, even with a thick layer of snow on the ground in most parts of the state. During the past weekend, hunters were attacked by bears in separate incidents. In one incident, in southwest Montana in Tom Miner Basin, a hunter was hiking in to retrieve an elk. He encountered a bear and deployed bear spray. He sustained minor injuries in the attack. In another incident near Pendroy, north of Choteau...

Bear Paw Mountains rancher Micky Kane had an idea one day. Kane was a very good hunter and loved the trophies he could bring home from his various hunts. But his house was filled with trophies and there were seemingly more to come because that is the way of a trophy hunter, there are never enough and there is that one full mount of a record breaking moose or a Kodiak bear ready to attack, again another record breaker. What to do with all his mounts was his question? Then it came to him. Add...

They will be having their famous cinnamon roll and bake sale starting at 9am that day and lasting until all the baked goods are gone. Here is a tip from the Senior Citizens Coo...

Go to the elementary school in Big Sandy or Big Sandy High School when Gwen Kane is there and you will find that already pleasant teachers, administrators more pleasant and smiling more simply because Gwen Kane is substitute teaching that day. We, at "The Mountaineer" had wanted to interview Gwen for quite a while now and when we asked for the story, Gwen told us that she...
Oh, no, “The Mountaineer” is going to try and predict the weather once again. Recently on the street one wag was talking to another and the one said, “Why don’t they just give up. They are worse than the National Weather Service!” I imagined that the two were talking of a recent weather story that was written at “The Mountaineer” and was none too accurate. I had to laugh because although our story was none too accurate, we got it from the National Weather Service so we could not possibly be worse than they are. We don’t knock the National Weath...
